The lathe machines were first invented in 15th century. In earlier times, these were known as Bow Lathes. Over the years lathe machines have undergone many improvements and been revamped as per modern requirements. The modern day lathe machines are computerized and quite advanced as compared to their older versions. The lathe machines are basically used for giving desired shapes to various work pieces such as sundry metals, plastic and wood, etc. These machines are capable of achieving rotating speeds. And with these speeds, the work piece is cut and drilled and also sanded with precision.

Various Types Of Lathe Machines

Small & large lathes: The small lathes are light-weight and portable. These are hinged with wheels and can be moved from one place to another. These are usually bench mounted. The large size lathes are not portable and it’s difficult to move them around.

Special Purpose Lathe Machines: Special purpose lathe machines can be categorized as general lathes, bench-type jeweler's lathes, and other special purpose lathes. The general type lathes are used when identical parts have to be produced in bulk. These are, thus, very cost effective. The special purpose lathes are used for shaping specific materials and objects. Some of the examples of these special purpose lathes are multi-spindle lathe, automatic lathe, crankshaft lathe, etc. The bench-type jeweler’s lathe is a small engine lathe. It usually comprises of lead screw, manual Crossfeed and collet-type chuck.

Maintenance & Precautions

  • Since, lathe machines have to be work continuously, they must be well oiled and the adjustments should be checked properly before starting operations. Apart from causing freak accidents, slacking bolts and nuts can also speed up the wear and tear process.
  • The machine must be cleaned regularly so that dirt and debris do not accumulate and hamper the overall performance.
  • One should be prudent enough to check the condition of different parts of the machine such as gears and screws from time to time. In case they are worn out, they replacement should be done immediately.

Some of the types of lathes that one can easily procure from the market include heavy duty lathe machine, all geared lathe machine, roll turning lathe machines, V Belt driven lathe machine, special purpose lathe machine, etc.
