Honda Jazz Included In Takata Airbag Recall
Posted: Apr 21, 2016
If you are considering a Honda Jazz for sale, you may have felt a little disconcerted to find that the Takata airbag recall has recently been expanded to include several Honda Jazz variants. While reputable dealers will ensure that any vehicles are safe, it is important that you know all recall details before you agree to any Honda Jazz sale.
The Takata Airbag Recall:
This recall has seen an enormous amount of media attention since it first came into the spotlight in 2013. Takata was responsible for manufacturing up to twenty percent of all the airbags in the global car industry. This has made this recall the largest in automotive history. To date, the recall has affected over 53 million cars, with 34 million in the United States and over 500,000 here in Australia. These staggering figures have caused chaos around the world, with the recall.gov.au government information site suffering technical difficulties and crashing due to the sheer volume of visitor traffic when the latest recall additions were announced.
Originally Takata laid the blame on faulty fitting and car manufacturer error, but they have since admitted fault in United States hearings. The affected car brands include Honda, Nissan, Mazda, BMW, Toyota, Lexus, Ford, General Motors, Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz. Up until now, there have been no injuries directly linked to the fault in Australia, but the fault has been linked to six deaths and numerous injuries overseas.
The Fault:
If you are looking to buy new Honda Jazz models, there should be no issue since the fault has been identified, but if you are looking at a pre-owned model, you will need to know the fault details. The recall is centred around the potential for moisture to intrude in the airbag detonator. This can cause it to fracture on deployment with the possibility of metal shards being released into the cabin through the airbag. Until recently Takata claimed that the fault did not exist or that it had been rectified during their manufacturing process. The company was also accused of destroying evidence relating to the fault. Back in November 2014, it was suspected that Takaya had destroyed details of their internal testing results, which would have documented the potential fault in the airbags. Due to the large scale of the recall, it could take some years for all the potentially faulty airbags to be removed from the market. It has been suggested that even scrapped vehicles will need to be checked, to ensure that the airbag assembly is not reused in another vehicle.
Is Your Honda Jazz Affected?
Whether you own a Honda Jazz or are considering a Honda Jazz for sale, you will need to check the VIN against the Honda database to see if you are affected by the recall. There are several Honda models which have been recalled, including 2012-2014 Jazz’s, CRVs, City’s and Insight’s.
