The 45th edition of the Space Coast Marathon and Half Marathon are scheduled for November 27, 2016. Registrations are in full swing for this popular marathon that follows a scenic route along the Indian River in east coastal Florida.

The beautiful waterfront course in the quaint Cocoa Village unfolds with striking long stretches interspersed with a few gently sloping hills. Both the 13.1 mile half marathon and 26.2 mile full marathon stay mostly at sea level while testing the strength and determination of the runners.

Organized by the Running Zone Foundation and Space Coast Runners, this is not only Florida’s oldest marathon but also the only space-themed marathon on Earth. Indeed, the race is conducted literally in the shadow of the Kennedy Space Center and thus honors the incredible achievements of the Space Shuttle program. The marathon starts with the roar of a Space Shuttle countdown and liftoff on the Jumbotron and there are attractive space-themed stations and props all along the course and at the finishing line too. Not only are the volunteers dressed in NASA-like uniforms and hats, but many of the runners also turn up in interesting costumes!

And the award goes to…..

Taking off from the Space Center, the awards and medals are also creatively designed to reflect the spirit of the marathon. The finisher medals are truly astronomical as they feature space shuttles that had their inaugural flight in the corresponding year. While 2013 was the year of Columbia, 2014 of Challenger and 2015 of Discovery, the year 2016 is dedicated to Endeavour with the 45th Anniversary emblazoned for all to see. 2017 will see a flurry of Atlantis medals to commemorate the launch of another new space shuttle!

Apart from this, 2 bonus medals are also up for grabs. The Milky Way Challenge finisher medal goes to runners who complete any 3 races in 5 years while the Intergalactic Challenge finisher medal is especially reserved only for those who manage to finish all 5 races in 5 years.

These unique awards are given across various categories such as top three overall male and female winners, top male and female master (over 40) and top three finishers in each of the 14 five-year age groups, (15-19 to 80+)

Not to forget that the Space Coast Marathon is a designated RRCA Regional Southern Championship race for 2016 as is the half marathon. RRCA awards will also be given to the top finishers. Moreover, it is also certified by USA Track and Field, and can be used as qualifying courses for prospective Boston Marathon entrants.

Registrations are limited to 3600 racers each for both the Space Coast Marathon and Half Marathon. So, what are you waiting for? Blast off and sign up to claim your stunning space shuttle finisher medal right away!
