Christopher Best: Finance Degree
Posted: Apr 30, 2016
Christopher Best is working toward his Master of Finance degree at Florida International University in Miami. He already holds a Master of Music Education from FIU, and taught music and band for five years in the Miami-Dade County public school system.
A graduate degree in Finance should prepare Christopher Best for a number of different professions within the private and public sectors. Financial analysis, for example, is a rigorous discipline that requires a precise attention to detail. Financial analysts perform many functions in the financial services industry, usually based on how much experience they’ve got. In the first few years of a career, a typical financial analyst usually spends most of the time gathering data, updating spreadsheets, and keeping up with relevant financial news and industry developments.
He has a head start on this, having worked as an intern in the Finance and Accounting Department of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts since early in 2016. He also served for more than a year as the Assistant Treasurer for the Florida Band Masters Association District 16, where he was active in several treasury roles and received valuable experience in managing finances.
Once a financial analyst has a few years of industry experience, his or her professional responsibilities are likely to expand. A senior analyst is going to spend a lot of time developing contacts, and marketing the work of a team. The more years an analyst has under his or her belt, the more likely they are going to begin mentoring younger analysts.
It is common for a financial analyst to put in long hours at work, with days that are underway by six o’clock in the morning and continuing well into the evening. Days are marked by meetings with colleagues, when the results of research might be discussed. There are also meetings with traders and sales people. The ebb and flow of any particular day is going to be guided by such things as an earnings calendar and the marketing calendar of senior analysts, as well as any research projects that are underway – and some usually are.
Christopher Best also stays busy musically, as a saxophonist with the Greater Miami Symphonic Band and the orchestra of the Kendall United Methodist Church. He also gives private saxophone instruction to students of all ages, some of whom have been with him for many years.
