When taking a course at any undergraduate program, you are required to be ajack of all trades i.e., when you study anthropology,you are compelled to study some sub-disciple courses, but if you are studying ancient and classical civilisations, some undergraduate majors are not important

However, it is important for anyone studying history or related course to begin to learn several ancient and modern languages because they are part of the rules guiding such discipline. Before anyone can work as an archaeologist in the United States and to be allowed to perform some basic laboratory studies, such a person must have undergraduate degree (B.A/ B.S) in the field.

The undergraduate degree would be enough to coordinate crews and also sufficient for one to occupy many government positions in archaeology or related departments. Practical work for private companies, museums and colleges for one year of field and laboratory work is the minimum required for as stipulated by (spa) society of professional archaeologist.

The next graduate degree should be the Ph.D.and the holder of this degree is qualified to teach in a university or occupy a museum curatorship. However individual should know that a minimum of 2-3 years is required before a holder of M.A can be acquired

Training in archaeology is divided into two, it is either M.A or M.S.degree. 2-3 years course program with a written thesis that shows the report of original research conducted by the student before a certificate beyond M.A can be given to the student. Student should know that the preparation of a written thesis is part of the education curriculum for any student planning to work on a Ph.D. though there are programs that offers a non-thesis M.A degree.

Recently, the number of colleges and universities that offer these courses were 36 in the US and they offer both forensic archaeology and historical archaeology.

How Archaeology operates:

Survey- The survey method is a modern method which requires the archaeologist to systematically look for a place where he or she wants to carryout the survey. Before the survey method, researchers will excavate the plainly visible features of monumental sites. Survey method now included different patterns such as aerial survey, geophysical survey, and regional survey etcetera. Under the surface pattern, the researcher survey the land based on settlement patterns and structure of the ancient civilisationthat occupied that land. Archaeologist try to sum-up information about primitive cultures and employ mini-excavation methods. Some of the mini-excavation methods employed are augers, corer, and shovel test pits. Excavation –this method makes use of sampling method before excavating a site inorder to reduce ethical issues brought about bythe destruction of the located sites. This has been the only method of physicallyacquiring primitive remains.

Analysis – next is laboratory analysis after the artifact or remain have been collected through the above method such as survey and excavation. It usually consumes time before an archaeologist can officially publish a report that shows the evidence of the research.
