What makes an Irish wedding so special? It’s the distinctive mood of the ceremony, the following of ancient traditions, the unique décor and of course the lovely church settings. Nothing can compare to the glamour of traditional Irish weddings.
A Look At Some Very Interesting Irish Wedding Traditions
There were many traditions associated with Irish weddings which today are no longer followed, excepting maybe a rare case. For example did you know that in ancient Ireland, weddings were at one point held only on a Sunday? It was done this way because people were busy working throughout the week and free only on Sundays. This tradition was continued till the spread of Christianity in Ireland.
After Christianity spread, this tradition was replaced and now weddings are held mostly on Saturdays, though you can also find them held on weekdays. Sundays are now not considered for weddings and holding one on this day is very rare. Another tradition of the past is the hand fast ceremony in which the hands of the bride and groom were tied together. Today of course, this is replaced by the exchange of vows and rings. There is another Irish saying that the best time to marry is on New Year’s Eve. Start a new life in the New Year. Marry in December and true love will last.
Another unique Irish Tradition is the use of the Claddagh ring during the wedding. It has a very unique shape. Two hands clasp a heart that is adorned with a crown and it is usually used by the groom to indicate that the wearer is taken forever. Yet, another lovely tradition followed to this day in the ceremony is the lighting of the unity candle. The taper candles are lit by the mother of both the families. The bride and the groom use each of the taper candles to light the majestic unity candle which symbolizes the coming together of both families. You can find Irish wedding candles, favors, accessories & more in stores selling wedding supplies.
An interesting turn of events that is happening now is people using traditional Irish buildings and national monuments as the venue for their wedding ceremony. These buildings have very majestic interiors, reflecting Irish culture which makes them the perfect location for a typical Irish wedding ceremony. Of course, the weddings are soon followed by a reception held at the most popular hotel, with people being hired to act as page boys, attendants and even be the ring bearer.
Irish weddings are incomplete without the traditional Irish wedding drink. The most common choice is Poteen which is whisky made from potatoes. The recipe used is an old one and various villages in Ireland prepare this drink. The taste varies depending on the type of potatoes used. Yet another traditional drink is Mead which is a mixture of white wine and herbs. Of course, today you can also find people celebrating their wedding toast with champagne.
The horseshoe is a wonderful Irish wedding tradition that is followed till today. The bridge carries the horseshoe down the aisle and it is tied by the groom to their matrimonial home. In the olden days, a traditional horse shoe was used, but today it is replaced by glass and porcelain horseshoes. The traditional Irish wedding culminates in the Irish feast, which includes the best Irish dishes, Irish music and Irish dance which all go together to make it memorable and enjoyable for all.
