Eight Rules of Etiquette in Flying Texas Flags

Part of the fact that Texas flags are symbols of patriotism and loyalty towards the state is the concept of etiquette when flying these flags. Most people don’t really think about whether or not they adhere to ethical standards on displaying these flags. If you’re one of those people, then you’ll definitely want to know about them:

  1. Always remember the anatomy of the Texas flags. If you’re going to be buying a state flag, make sure that it adheres to the original design. The Texas flag has a rectangular 2:3 ration on the width and length. All stripes cover equal 1/3 portions. The blue stripe is vertical while the white and red ones are horizontal, with the white one on top. The star is white with five points.
  2. Displaying the flag horizontally. When displaying the Texas flags horizontally (as you would when using a flagstaff), make sure the blue vertical strip is on the left side. This would mean that the white stripe is above the red one, as it should be.
  3. Displaying the flag vertically. When hanging the flag on a vertical position, the blue stripe must be above the red and white ones. More importantly, the white stripe should be to the right of the red one. Note: to get this right, simply rotate the horizontally displayed flag clockwise.
  4. Hoisting and lowering. When hoisting or raising the flag, do so quickly. But when it’s time to bring it down, do so slowly and ceremoniously. The flag shouldn’t drop too fast.

5. Fly outdoors only when there’s sunlight. Never fly the Texas flags without the light of the sun. That means any time before sunrise and after sunset. The only exception to this is if the flag is well lighted.

  1. The US Flag is above or equal to the Texas Flag. When the US flag and the Texas flags are hoisted on the same halyard, the US flag should be hoisted first and above the Texas flag. If they’re hoisted on separate poles, they should be at the same level.
  2. Proper folding. When folding the flag after it has been lowered start with folding the red stripe over the white. Then take the edges and fold it over the red side. You have done it properly if only the white and blue sides of the flag can be seen.
