Your garden is an extension of your home and brings value to your property. Planning a garden does not mean just visiting the local garden supply store and picking out plants that look pretty and colourful. It involves planning and designing a theme for your garden that will complement the overall landscape.

But before you decide on a theme for your garden, you should consider a few important aspects of your property:

  • Understand the geography of your yard, the lay of the land, the soil quality and the climate. The areas falling under shade, sunny areas or semi-shady areas will develop their own "micro climate" for which you need to select the right type of plants for your garden. Also take note of the direction of water drainage in your yard.
  • Think about how your garden will be used – for outdoor entertaining or relaxing. Or, do you have children and pets who will use the garden more often?

These aspects must be considered before you decide on creating a garden space, although we give here some tips for planning and designing theme of your garden.

  1. Identify your style and extend it to your outdoor space to create a theme that reflects it. Would you like a lush green space with seating arrangements for relaxing outdoors after a long day? Or, would you prefer a minimalist garden with just a well-kept lawn and few flower beds? A theme could be simply to have flowering plants and trees in your garden encircling a sitting area or it could be a full-fledged oriental garden.
  2. The next step is to prepare a plan on paper, that is, draw up a diagram to show which garden elements to be installed where depending on your understanding of the yard topography.
  3. It is advisable to keep things simple when planning and designing theme of your garden. Remember, you need to maintain the garden in an impeccable state, and that will take up much of your time and cost a packet.
  4. Pay attention to detail when designing a garden theme. Also think about the future effect, because plants tend to grow out and your garden theme looks altogether different from what you had in mind with the passage of the seasons.
  5. Plants in your garden not only provide vegetable and fruit, they can be used to define your garden space. For example, a hedge can be used to demarcate an area or create a barrier. Certain plants can be used to create a focal point to highlight a garden element of your choice.
