All about Salt Mines

Salt, it is among the most important items a person uses in daily life. It is that essential part of foodstuff without which no food can be complete as it is the first preferred ingredient to make something salty and spicy. But this food item is available easily in the supermarkets but have ever thought from where actual salt comes from? One has to extract it from the rocks. Many of our everyday habits and things come from rocks and other natural resources which are extracted in a proper manner. Mining is the technique of digging deep mines to extract things; it can be precious items or basic requirements. Similarly, salt is extracted from deep underground seabeds.
Krakow is very famous for its salt mines, having deposits of salt from thousands of years. Being a minor ingredient, one thinks that it is a very easy process to extract salt from the sea; on the contrary it is a complex process.
There are two ways of extracting salt from the mines, which are:
Deep shaft mining: In this kind, shafts are sunk down to the floors of mines and then rooms are made by drilling or blasting, then a belt is used to lift the crushed salt from the surface. By this type a person acquires the rock salt.
Solution mining: This is a type where wells are built above the salt beds and the salt is dissolved in water. Then the solution made is evaporated and removing other unwanted minerals and after the entire procedure a person gets the salt. This is table salt used in kitchen.
There are a lot of salt mines all over the world, but one of the most renowned in Krakow is Wieliczka salt mine. This mine has been in Krakow from 13th century producing table salt from 2007. This is considered the oldest mine all over the world which is still in operation. This mine is not only a mine, but is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Krakow. People from all over the world especially visit Krakow to have a look at this mine. There are a dozen of statues built with rock salt and the four chapels carved by the miners, are mind blowing and a must to see in this mine. This mine is known in the list of Poland’s official national historic monuments which are visited by more than one million people all around the year.
