American Experience: Zoot Suit Riots in Montebello

Do you know about a vey terrorizing part of American history? The talked episode here is the zoot Suit riots. These riots broke around year 1943. Already the country was effected w by world war. It was august, 1, 1942 when a young Mexican aged 22 was murdered at a party in Los Angeles. This brutal stabbing of this man ignited tension in the minds of local Americans. The maxi can Americans were looked as criminals by the whites of Los Angeles. The police arrested over 600 young Mexican Americans. The arrested boys were as young as 12 years. They pulled out of movie theaters, bars cafes diners and many other places. They all wore the similar dress code that included brim hats, baggy pants, high boots and long tailed coats. The police called them "Zoot suiters ".

Based on their dress Police claimed they were responsible for terrorizing the city. Among the accuse seventeen Mexican Americans were convicted, even when there was no sufficient evidence. This turned the situation violent and young Mexican Americans turned rebellious and the city was in the grip of riots. The riots broke between service man and Mexican Americans.
