Having a child and successfully raising him is probably one of the most fulfilling things that one can ever achieve in his or her lifetime. Seeing them running around with both smile and dirt on their faces might give you the simplest joy, but we cannot deny that making them stay still or asking them to eat whatever it is that you have prepared for them also gives you a tad of both happiness and hassle - this is why many of those who are planning to start a family take parenting courses first.

A lot of us often follow our guts when it comes to parenting. Others prefer to use the same techniques that their parents used upon raising them; but what does it take for one to successfully raise a child?

As vague as it is, parenting is actually one of the most researched fields in the world of social science. Whatever style it is that you apply upon raising your child, or whatever concern it is that you may have, there will always be a number of experts that can help you out. Here are 5 tips that can help you establish a close and healthy relationship with your child:

1. Always keep your emotions in check. Sometimes, we tend to let our feelings overpower our mind, especially when we're angry. This scares off our kids, especially when we tend to express our anger physically. Whether you're dealing with a low set of grades, hidden boyfriends, or meal issues, it's best to face your child with calmness - not only will this result in a peaceful discussion; this will also encourage your child to be more honest and open with you.

2. Bond with them. Your children will be delighted to see you join them in activities that they enjoy the most. However, we cannot deny the fact that some things are just not as appealing to you as it is to them (like shopping or video games for instance) - so if their thing isn't your thing, then find a way to spend time with them, and make sure to incorporate fun in it (like watching their favorite movie as a family) to make it extra special. You can also help them with their lessonsand offer anything that you can help. This will help you establish a special connection to them.

  1. Learn how to listen to them. Just because you gave birth to him and gave him everything that he had ever needed in his life doesn't mean that you can choose to be a dictator and show them who's boss. When their opinions are being valued, they'd see it as a sign of importance, love, and respect.
  2. Patience. We tend to explode when we're irritated. There are times when our child is mad and takes out their anger on us, but it doesn't mean that they meant every word they said. Often times, it's their anger speaking, not them - so don't add fuel to the fire. Instead of biting back at him, tell him that it's not right to speak to you that way, but you still understand him because you know that he's just upset. Ask him what's wrong and they'll definitely appreciate it.
  3. Don't play favorites. See to it that all of your children are being loved equally. When they see someone being favored above everyone else, chances are, sibling rivalry would arise, and jealousy would never stop. Be fair to all of them at all times. Remind them constantly that no matter what their differences are, you will still and will always love them equally.
6. Appreciate them always. Never forget to praise them when they've done something right. Doing so will make them feel confident and happy.

7. Don't cage them up. Let them live their lives and enjoy the freedom that they deserve. You can make rules as parents of the child, but make sure that his or her social needs are always met. If they want to do something that you don't want them to, try to think of alternatives.

The key to establishing a strong connection with your children is to make sure that you never fail to remind them how much you love them, not just in words, but in action as well.
