During the mid-1980s, the term "indie rock music" emerged into usage in order to enhance the music that was produced by post-punk labels. The indie rock scenario was successful in dominating the college radio playlists, including some of the key bands like The Smiths from the UK and R.E.M. from the US. These bands did not approve of the leading ‘synthpop’ from the early 1980s, as well as helped to inspire the guitar-based jangle pop. Some other significant bands of the same genre include The La's and The Housemartins.

In the United States, new indie music was mainly related to the rough, distortion and heavy sounds of the HüskerDü, Pixies, Meat Puppets, Minutemen, The Replacements and Dinosaur Jr. The most abrasive outcome of punk was the music form known as noise rock, which highlighted the loud distorted electrical guitars along with powerful drums, and was lead towards the way by bands like Swans, Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers and Big Black.

A large number of well known best indie songs and record labels came into existence during the 1980s. Some of these were the Washington, DC's Dischord Records in the year 1980, the Seattle's Sub Pop Records in the year 1986 and the New York City's Matador Records as well as Durham, North Carolina's Merge Records in the year 1989. The famous recording label known as Chicago's Touch and Go Records was opened as a fanzine in 1979 and started to release the records during the 1980s.

The 1990s saw major changes in the whole alternative rock milieu. Popular grunge bands like Nirvana, Sound garden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Hole all rose to fame and made their place in the mainstream, achieving a commercial success in the music industry with a widespread exposure. Punk restoration bands such as Green Day and The Offspring also became quite popular and were placed under the alternative term. In the same way, new bands like Blur and The Oasis came into existence and were very popular as reported by Britpop which was a media driven focus on bands that were associated with Indie rock music in the 1990s, in the United Kingdoms.

As the alternative rock bands started to grow in popularity and move into mainstream, the term "alternative" gradually lost its actual meaning and was now being referred to as totally new and different form of music which was being liked by a wide variety of audiences, whereas the term "indie rock music" was now being related with the bands and genres that were dedicated and maintained their independent status.

But the era of Indie rock music has had to face a lot of challenges as around the same time, the United Kingdoms was stepping into the phase of the Afghan War and was affected badly especially in terms of the economic conditions of the nation as a result of the actions of the labour party. The lyrics associated with this kind of music were not appropriate politically at that time.
