Custom-made Subwoofer Boxes
Posted: May 25, 2016
In the internet has made searching for and purchasing subwoofer enclosures much simpler. People often ask if it is better to purchase one online or attempt to build one themselves. The answer to that question is not going to be the same for everyone. If you have the skill-set, the time, access to tools and materials, and a place to conduct the build, then you may be better off going the DIY route. However, for the other 95% of people, the answer would be to simply purchase one. Most people don’t have the time or patience to build an enclosure, let alone the skills needed to measure, fit, and size it properly. Others may have the skills and knowledge, but not the tools or access to the materials needed. Most people just want the quickest way to finish the task and that means placing an order online and in a few days, the sub box you ordered is waiting on your doorstep. If you have chosen the right company that builds quality enclosures, you can be assured of a proper fit to your vehicle and that the size of the chambers is within a range needed for your particular subwoofers.
For those who insist on building their own cabinets, here are a few tips to guide you through the process. First you will need to decide the best place in the vehicle to mount your subwoofer box. It is always a good idea to check around the internet for different images of what others have done. Once you have selected an area, you can begin the process of making a mock up. A mock up is simply a way to rough in an enclosure using inexpensive materials. Cardboard for instance is a great material for this purpose because it is cheap and readily available. You can measure pieces and tape them together to start making your shape. It is easy to cut and fold and re-position. Once you have the cardboard mock-up made, you can make any adjustments and then transfer the final measurements to your mdf for cutting. On simple rectangular boxes, it may be possible to skip the mock-up process and simply measure out and build the enclosure. But for enclosures that fit complicated areas, a mock-up is a must. If you cut a few panels out of mdf and they are wrong, you not only wasted expensive materials, but you may short yourself for the rest of the project. Remember that while assembling your enclosure to seal the seams as you go. You can use silicone sealant or even liquid nails to ensure that there is an airtight seal on the cheap subwoofer box for sale. If you wait until the enclosure is completely finished, it is very difficult to access all the interior seams to apply sealant. After assembly, you are ready to cut the speaker holes. It is best to look at the manufacturer’s specs to see what the actual hole requirement is for your particular speaker. Sometimes manufacturers include a template to use for cutting the hole. The best method for cutting the hole is by using a router with an attached circle jig. This will give you the best cut and the roundest hole. It is also possible to use a jigsaw but care must be maintained throughout the cutting process to ensure the hole is cut round and to the right size. A hole that is a bit too small can be sanded larger, but a hole that is too large is problematic.
Once the speaker hole or holes are cut, you must decide if you want to use a terminal connection or simply drill a hole for the wires. Whatever method you choose, cut or drill those holes at this time. If you have opted for a ported enclosure you can drill the holes for the ports as well. Next comes finishing your enclosure. Most wood enclosures have a carpet finish. They can also be painted or even bed-lined. If you chose to wrap your enclosure with the carpet, make sure you have plenty of material to cover it completely. Map out where you want the seams to be. You don’t want the seams on any face that is visible. Seams are typically on the back or the bottom or on the ends. Once carpeted, it is time to install the speakers by wiring them to the terminals. If you opted to cut portholes, you can now install the ports. Make sure the ports are tight in the holes and that that they won’t get loose or push out by air movement or vibrations.
