You would have heard a lot of people telling you to avoid sugar whenever you ask them how to lose weight for good?!

Well, they are not wrong with their advice; but has someone ever told you the real reason for doing so? Its harmful effects go beyond gaining extra calories.

So here we are mentioning some reasons why sugar isn’t good for you.

  • The reason why added sugar is bad for you is that it supplies large amount of fructose to your body; and fructose is not essential for our body functioning in any way. It is glucose that our body requires, and it can be metabolized by pretty much every cell in the body. If we don’t get it from the diet, our bodies make it from proteins and fat.The only organ that metabolizes fructose is the liver. But many things in our body start to go wrong when we start consuming lot of fructose. Most of the fructose gets turned into fat. This process is also one of the most leading causes to most of the chronic diseases.
  • Remember, sugar does not contain any nutrition. So do not get misguided by those television commercials claiming their high sugar food, like sodas, candies, and pastries, as highly nutritious. Instead, they are empty calories – leading you to gain more weight. People who eat these foods more are generally suffering from obesity and deficient in many important nutrients.
  • Eating lot of sugar can lead you to non alcoholic fatty liver disease. Because when we eat fructose it goes to the liver. If your liver glycogen is low, such as after workout, the liver will use fructose to replenish it. But if you are not undergoing, or doing less physical activities, the liver will turn fructose into fat. This fact, if doesn't get shipped out, builds up over time and can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
  • Excess consumption of fructose can also lead to insulin resistance, which a stepping stone in the direction of obesity and diabetes. For this, let’s first understand how the insulin works. Insulin is secreted by pancreas in the liver, and its main function is to drive glucose from the bloodstream into cells, because elevated glucose level is also harmful. Apart from regulating glucose, insulin also tells the fat cells to hold on to the fat which they already carry and pick up extra fat from the bloodstream. This is also a very important function it performs; but when you continue to consume extra calorific diet, your cells tend to become resistant to the effect of insulin. This is how you get obesity. Over time, when your body grows more resistant to insulin, the pancreatic cells get damage and go dormant, denying the production of any more insulin. Ad this is how you get type II diabetes.

Remember, your body can get required sugar from other food stuff, and added sugar does you no good. If you want to stay fit and learn how to lose weight, it’s highly advised to let go your desire to taste sugar.
