Food contamination can be caused by:

  • Improper handling, preparing, and storing of food
  • Improper washing of hands and fingernails
  • Poor personal hygiene habits of food employees
  • People who may seem well but who carry pathogens that can make other people sick
  • Improperly cleaned and sanitized eating and cooking utensils and equipment
  • Contamination of food, utensils, and equipment from flies, roaches, and other insects and pests
  • Use of foods from unapproved sources

Bacteria and viruses are the most common cause of food poisoning. Food can transmit disease from person to person as well as serve as a growth medium for bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Food Poisoning symptoms could be upset stomach, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, and dehydration. Symptoms may range from mild to severe.

Treating food poisoning can often be done at home. Few things to remember always:

  • Allow the stomach and body to rest. Do not continue to eat and drink for several hours.
  • Do not resist the urge to vomit or have diarrhoea. The body is attempting to rid the cause of food poisoning from the body.
  • Avoid caffeine drinks.
  • Drink 8 to 16 glasses of liquids daily.
  • Add foods slowly back into the diet. Take small bites.
  • Avoid dairy foods as well as foods high in fat.
  • Get adequate amounts of rest if you have food poisoning.Avoid any sort of physical activity.
  • Visit a medical professional if diarrhoea lasts more than 3 days.

  • Be careful when storing and using high risk foods.
  • Clean chopping boards between each usage.
  • Store food at the proper temperature.
