Understanding How Live-in Care Services Work

As health and cognitive abilities diminish with age, seniors often require help with basic day-to-day activities known as activities of daily living (ADL). Such assistance is generally needed for only few hours a day and a care plan is accordingly created. However, sometimes because of certain reasons (unavailability of a family caregiver, Alzheimer's, etc.), round-the-clock assistance is needed by seniors. Live-in care services are tailored for such situations where around-the-clock help is provided to the seniors. This assures the family members that their loved one is not alone and appropriately taken care of.

Live-in care is round-the-clock assistance, but usually an 8-hour sleeping break is given to the caregiver in the night. The caregiver is still available to help the senior if needed, though, the frequency of such instances is expected to be quite low (twice, perhaps). If the senior requires considerable help even in the night, two caregivers for 12-hour shift each could be used. A caregiver can stay from 12 hrs per day to 3-4 weeks at a stretch with the care recipient. A separate bed as well as meals are provided by the care recipient to the caregiver while she/he stays in the house.

While living with the care recipient, the caregiver could also provide help with instrumental ADLs in addition to the usual basic ADLs. Comfort Keepers provides high-quality customized live-in care services in Hasbrouck Heights, Wood-Ridge, Teterboro, and many other areas of New Jersey. A caregiver of Comfort Keepers stays with the client for 2-3 weeks at a stretch and leaves for only few days to get rejuvenated for another 2-3 week stint. An appropriate replacement is provided for this small gap taking into consideration likes/dislikes of the client.

Various ADLs that are often covered under this type of in-home care are bathing, grooming, maintaining hygiene, mobility assistance, transferring & positioning, toilet assistance, incontinence care, etc. Help with instrumental ADLs is also provided under companionship that include meal preparation, housekeeping, laundry, running errands, transportation assistance, engaging recipients in mental activities, giving reminders to take medication, and assisting with reading. Generally, once the caregiver has prepared a meal for the care recipient, both of them eat together. Also, a caregiver can provide transportation assistance to take a senior for important medical appointments, visit to a local senior center, for shopping, buying groceries, attending church or any other meeting, etc. Hence, a senior gets a round-the-clock comprehensive non-medical in-home care with live-in care services.
