History & Origin of Linen Sarees in India

The origin of Linen dates back to thousands of years when people for the first time began to weave plant fiber into string and cloth. Made from flax plant that grows in the Mediterranean region and central Asia, in India, weaving of linen into fabric began around 5000BC. Woven from handspun yarns, linen garments then were extremely fine. In fact, the finish of linen yarns in those times has such finesse that cannot be seen in the ones produced today on spinning machines.

Features of Linen Sarees

A Feature most commonly associated with pure linen silk sarees is the presence of ‘slubs’ which are nothing but small knots that occur randomly along the length of a saree. These clubs give linen sarees a textured look and add to their raw appeal.Linen sarees have a high natural sheen and luster to them which is multiplied when mixed with that of silk in linen silk sarees.Since linen is extracted from plant fiber, handwoven linen sarees have a natural colour that comes in shades of ivory, tan or grey. Unlike the belief that linen sarees are soft and thin, they have a thick or thin character with a crisp and textured feel and can range from being rough and stiff to smooth and soft. Pure linen silk sarees have the ability to absorb and lose water rapidly and can take up to 20% moisture without feeling damp. Linen has this amazing quality of being highly absorbent and thus the handwoven linen sarees quickly absorbs sweat from the skin, keeping it dry and free from any skin rashes and make a perfect wear in hot, humid & dry weather. Another great quality of these linen sarees is that though they accentuate the curves of a woman, they do not cling to the skin. The fabric of Linen sarees is very strong and durable. In fact, it is one of the few fabrics that’s stronger when wet than dry. Since linen does not stretch, Linen sarees don't wear off easily and have a longer shelf life.Maintenance of these sarees is relatively easy as they have a natural flair to resist dirt and stains. Pure linen silk sarees can withstand high temperatures and also they don’t shrink much compared to other fabrics. Some of these truly incredible qualities make linen sarees must have and their charm has not faded away in all these years.
