Containing high levels of essential nutrients, fruits constitute an important part of our daily diet. Some fruits are seasonal while others are available round the year. So, in order to fulfill the high demand for seasonal fruits at other times of the year, many varieties are stored and refrigerated. But frozen fruits do not have the same freshness and texture that the fresh fruits have. However, in terms of the nutritional value, frozen fruits are same as the fresh fruits.

Many people who buy fruits on daily basis might not find it a problem to buy fresh fruits as they have appropriate knowledge about how to select the best out of the lot. But it might be a tough task for those who are going to shop for fruits for the first time. Even, many a times, fruits are artificially preserved or wax coated which makes it difficult to make out whether the fruits are fresh or not. Taking this into consideration, here are some tips that you can follow while you shop for fresh fruits.

How to Choose Fresh Fruit: 4 Simple Steps

  • Seasonal- While you are buying fruits make sure that they are in season i.e. they are easily available at this time of the year. Off-season fruits are basically not fresh or are refrigerated or stored to make available for the demands in off-season. Fruits that are out of season might even be imported from somewhere else making them a little pricey.
  • Sense Check – While purchasing fruits, pick them up, touch and feel them to ensure whether they are fresh or not. Fresh fruits will have a typical ripe smell. Fruits that are not fresh or are spoilt will have a bad odor. The best indication for fresh fruit is a green stem over a ripe fruit.
  • Surface Texture- Look at the fruit’s appearance and texture while selecting. Even, make sure that the fruits are not damaged or bruised. High quality fresh fruits are brightly colored and are firm to touch.
  • Selection - Always select the fruit from an open section or a food display. Avoid taking fruits that are in closed boxes or bulk bags. Open display makes it possible for you to avoid any spoilt fruit and also ensures that the other fruits are not spoilt.
