As an inventor, businessman, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Simon Wilby has always been concerned about the environment, which is why he has focused much of his work on creating products that make use of clean and renewable energy sources, such as solar power. There are many environmental issues that the world faces in the present day, including all of the following.

Pollution

The issue of pollution has only grown in recent years, especially as more nations become industrialized. The smog and fumes given off by factories and vehicles create unhealthy air that can lead to a number of ailments forming in the people who have to breathe the polluted air. Furthermore, a lot of pollution results from the burning of fossil fuels, which leads to the release of carbon and other harmful chemicals into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change in the process.

Climate Change

To expand on the issue of climate change, most scientists agree that the temperature of the Earth is gradually changing and that humankind is having a direct effect on the process. Climate change is harmful because it causes changes to established weather patterns, while also leading to larger issues in the long-term, such as the melting of the polar ice caps and the occurrence of new diseases.

Deforestation

With such an enormous demand for wood in the modern world, it is perhaps unsurprising that deforestation has become such a hot-button issue in recent years. Many companies still fail to follow sustainable logging practices, which has led to the destruction of large regions of forest, perhaps most noticeable in the Amazon. Deforestation removes the natural habitat of animals that rely on the forest to survive, changing local ecosystems and leading to widespread animal deaths in the process.

Household Waste

Despite the fact that household waste has been an issue for many hundreds of years, we still do not have many environmentally-conscious ways of disposing of the waste we generate. Landfills lead to the creation of no-go areas on land and at sea, while burning waste releases a variety of chemicals into the air. Furthermore plastics and other non-biodegradable waste can cause issues with wildlife.

Ozone Depletion

Simon Wilby notes that ozone depletion was one of the most relevant environmental issues when he started working as an inventor in the early-1990s. Depletion of the ozone layer leads to people being more exposed to harmful Ultraviolet rays, resulting in more occurrences of skin cancer and other issues.
