Most companies go for a 360 degree performance appraisal while rating their employees. Most what is a 360 degree performance appraisal. It is a process in which the co-workers, the managers of the companies and the subordinates rate the employee anonymously. This of the people and sometimes even the employees themselves do not even have a clue as to information about a person’s performance is then added to his performance review.

In a 360 degree appraisal, the performance of the employee for a period of time is discussed and the rates are given accordingly by other employees. In this kind of review, the employee who is being talked about not only gets the feedback from the supervisor but also from his co-workers or other employees. The purpose of this 360 degree appraisal is nothing but to monitor how a member is working as a part of a particular team and how the functioning of all the members of the team can be improved.

The 360 degree appraisal method was first used in the 1940s as a method of evaluating an employee and the medium through which an employee can receive feedback for his performance in the company by his peers and co-workers. It is believed that this kind of review test owes its name to a compass. Similar to multiple points on a compass, each employee gets to know the feedback about his performance from the subordinates, his co-workers, staff members and the customers as well.

Most of the companies use this tool to analyse the performance of their employees and help him or her map their path of career based on the feedback given. This assessment test is mostly conducted by the companies before taking any decision regarding the career of the employees.

This assessment is very useful for the employees as it helps them in developing in the areas they lag behind. The results of this feedback are also used by some companies and organisation to decide the pay and the post of an employee in the company.

The feedback can be given by anyone in the company who is in direct contact with the employee and can provide valuable insight or information about the on-the-job performance of the employee. More often than not, there are four integral parts of this assessment which include: Self appraisal, Superior’s appraisal, Subordinate’s and peer appraisal.

Self appraisal gives an employee a chance to reflect and know his strengths and weaknesses, his accomplishments and the areas in which he needs improvement.

The appraisal by a superior is a very professional kind of assessment in which the employee is judged on some parameters like communication skills, dedication towards his job, leadership qualities and many more.

The 360 degree performance appraisal is a powerful tool as it helps to keep a track of the changes in co-workers’ perceptions about the employee. It is found that this tool is more suitable to analyse a manager and assess his leadership and managing of his staff qualities.
