If you've ever been to a construction site or have been associated with industrial applications, you'll be familiar with the concept of hydraulic lifts. A hydraulic lift is an equipment that is used to transport heavy goods or even people from one place to another. Hydraulic lifts are particularly useful because they can transport extremely heavy loads or even lift them vertically without too much of a hassle. Naturally, they are considered to be immensely useful at construction sites where such heavy items have to be lifted and transported on a daily basis. In general, such lifts have been employed since time immemorial to elevate goods (usually the ones that weigh a few tonnes) from one level to another. But have you ever wondered about how they work, or what is it that makes them so efficient? Below you'll find everything that you'll ever need to know about operating a hydraulic lift.

The various parts of a hydraulic lift

Another form of the hydraulic lift is the hydraulic scissors lift. Now while it may appear extremely complicated to you, they are actually pretty straightforward. Here the five main components without which a hydraulic lift would be incomplete-

  1. Platform - The platform is located on the very top of the lift. This is where you will have to place your object, whatever it may be. Based on the weight of the object being lifted, the size of the platform and its carrying capacity can be adjusted.
  2. Base- Now we're going right down to the bottom to the portion of the lift which is in contact with the floor. This is an essential component because it will determine how the scissors' legs travel.
  3. Scissors legs- The whole purpose of the machine is to lift heavy goods from one level to another. The scissors legs would allow you to change the elevation from lower to higher or vice versa.
  4. Hydraulic cylinders - This is one of the most important components of the hydraulic lift. Usually, the hydraulic lifts that you see at construction sites contain either one or two or even three hydraulic cylinders. This is the component that helps the lift go from one level to another.
  5. Power Source - Of course you'll be needing a power source or a motor to run the hydraulic lift. In most lifts, an air motor or an electric one are used. This is the component that supplies enough power to the lift to make it move.

How can you use a hydraulic lift? Hydraulic goods lift is a pretty handy piece of equipment and can be used in a number of ways. For example, it is used by transportation companies. Such companies are responsible for transporting heavy machinery and goods across long distances by road. In that case, a lift would be of great help. Have you ever seen a vehicle lift or a table lift being used to load heavy materials like a pile of bricks or other raw materials on to a truck? Well, a vehicle lift is just one of the many variations of a hydraulic lift and works on the same principle. The hydraulic cylinder would help the equipment elevate to the level of the bed of the truck and the items (which have been mounted on the platform) are unloaded there. Easy, isn't it?

At construction sites, such hydraulic lifts are utilized as personnel lifts. The nomenclature must have hinted at what a personnel lift really does. It would carry workers and other personnel from one place to another. Usually, these are used to transport workers to the place where the materials are stored or to the main work area. This is especially used in the construction of high rise buildings. In these cases, the workers would have to go up to great heights to work. That wouldn't be possible without a hydraulic lift to take them from one level to another.

Do you know why such hydraulic lifts are so popular? That is because they create a comparatively safe environment for the workers. Construction workers are at a constant risk of injuries which can even prove to be fatal. However, chances of such injuries and accidents are greatly reduced when it comes to hydraulic goods lifts.

If you didn't know this already, a hydraulic lift could completely alter the way you're proceeding with your construction work. These are safe, faster and much more efficient.
