Even though like every other material, your furnace will age and require replacement, with proper furnace maintenance you can extend its life. Too often homeowners purchase a new unit when only a small repair or routine furnace maintenance is required. Here are some important furnace maintenance tips you should know about:

Replace the Air Filter Timely

A very important thing for the health and maintenance of your furnace is the air filter. This is why you should clean and replace the air filter frequently. If it is a washable filter make sure you wash it out on a regular basis. If it is a disposable filter make sure you replace it depending on how quickly it fills with debris. The filter system is extremely important as it prevents dirt from entering the furnace. Therefore, it is important that you regularly check the filter to see if it has accumulated dirt, is clogged and needs a replacement.

Test the Thermostat

Before winter comes and it becomes too cold outside, it is important to ensure that your heating system is working properly. An important step is to test your thermostat. You might want to set your thermostat to a warmer temperature and then wait for the furnace to start. For accurate results, you should leave the furnace running to see if it reaches the desired temperature. By simply checking if the furnace kicks on and off are likely to ensure that the thermostat and rest of the system are functioning fine.

Clean the Blower

Most people know about cleaning and replacing the air filters regularly, but it is equally important to clean out the blower as well. When the furnace operates, some of the dirt and debris that the filter stops make its way through to the blower of the system. The dirt and debris that accumulates here can create potential problems and inefficiencies over time. After removing the panels that cover the blower, wipe the blower, pulleys, and belts with a damp cloth.

Clean the Vents

Furnace systems are hooked with a venting system. At some point, this ventilation system can get blocked due to large amounts of dust and debris. Blocked ventilation can be dangerous for a lot of reasons. With the help of brush clean, all the vents or you may also use a vacuum cleaner.

These simple steps can ensure your furnace runs smoothly. However, for a detailed inspection, you might want to contact a certified HVAC technician to make sure your furnace is getting all the maintenance it needs.
