Have you ever thought how men used to work in the Stone Age? They used to work hard like a machine day and night. Life changed when new technology and facilities were introduced that made our life easier. Now we have machines for all the work that was hand held before. These machines have not only made our life easier, but have saved our time, cost and has increased the productivity.

What is a drill?

A drill is a tool which is used to enlarge holes in metals, wood and fixes various materials together. Drills are most commonly used for carpentry works, metal works and construction works. The different types of drills are: hand drills, pistol drills, hammer drills, rotary hammer drills, cordless drill, drill press etc.

What is a Hammer Drill?

It’s powerful tool which works by producing a quick series of blows. This equipment is used in masonry works for drilling stone, concrete, brick or any hard substance. Hammer drills are available in the market as corded or cordless. The first hammer drill was produced by German company Fein and it was patented in 1914. German company Bosch produced the first "Bosch-Hammer" around 1932 in mass production.

How does it work?

The hammer drill works by rotating the hammer in a circular motion which allows you to drill a hole or remove any hard substances. Hammer drill has a piston that is attached which helps to provide more power. In the hammer drill, the lower uneven edge is fixed and the upper portion rotates with the shaft. The two plates in the shaft slide against each other when the shaft rotates.

The uneven edges cause the upper portion to produce potential energy. And as the shaft slide further, the energy is released and the shaft is moved down. This helps the drill to penetrate into the heavy materials whether it is wood, concrete or metal.

How to be safe while using a hammer drill?

It is always better to take additional safety measures in order to avoid injury while drilling. The safety aspects are as follows:

  • You must dress properly by avoid wearing baggy clothes, long sleeves.
  • You should ensure that the drilling space is ready by preparing enough space for the drilling
  • You should ensure that the drill is handled properly and never to carry drill by its trigger.
  • You should ensure that the drill area is marked in order to work properly and safely.

You can buy this machine from any electrical store or via e-commerce websites. The price varies from 5000-75000 INR. If you are looking to buy branded drillers then look for DeWalt, Hitachi, Makita, Bosch, etc.
