Bryan Kolstad - Why Being Self-Employed is a Great Idea
Posted: Jul 18, 2016
Bryan Kolstad is a self-employed marine mechanic with over twenty years’ experience in the business. He runs his own service where he maintains and carries out repairs for clients’ boats. He started his business working as a marine mechanic right after graduating from high school and has gained valuable on-the-job experience. Bryan Kolstad shares a few reasons why being self-employed is a great idea.
You are Your Boss
Well, that’s the first thing that most self-employed people would say, "you are your own boss", and they are not wrong. Being self-employed makes you the boss of what you do. You do not have to be part of the rat-race and live life on the fast lane. You can dictate the terms of your work and not have to worry about the "higher-ups" constantly watching your every move. However, you must realize the importance of being good, extremely good at what you do. Because at the end of the day, your client has to be fully satisfied with the final product.
Increased Earnings
Being self-employed gives you the opportunity to earn more than those who are traditionally employed in offices. On average, freelancers earn about 45% more than their counterparts working in offices.
Reduced Spending
Being self-employed means that you will spend less on commuting to and back from work every day. If you are working from home, you do not have to worry about spending money on gas to get to work, reduced maintenance costs for your car, less waste of time commuting back and forth from work, etc. In today’s world, time is money, and being able to save a couple of hours each day by not commuting to your workplace means that you have that much extra time to get more work done from home. If you have a child, the amount of money you will save by not having to pay for child care itself is reason enough to want to be self-employed and work from home.
Your Own Schedule
Being self-employed means that you work at your own schedule. You do not have to be confined to a nine-to-five schedule, but you can decide to work when you want. You become the boss and you create your own work schedule. If you are not a morning person, you can choose to work late into the night and also get other things done that a regular nine-to-five job won’t allow you to do.
Bryan Kolstad has been self-employed ever since he started working as a marine mechanic in Maine.
