Healthy living has become more of a preferred choice for people today than a forced one. The innumerable lifestyle disorders has made the young and old equally health conscious. Therefore, in the current times, we can see many people taking up the occupation of a diet planner or a nutritionist. So, who is a dietician or nutritionist? Can you become one with proper training? A dietician or a nutritionist is an expert in food and nutrition. They are experts in advising people what to eat to lead a healthy lifestyle. In fact, doctors recommend patients to a nutritionist to understand their diet routine and manage a disease or disorder better.

Responsibility of a dietician

A role of a dietitian involves evaluating the health of their clients. Based on the results, dietitian or nutritionist would advise clients on the type of diet to follow – foods to eat and avoid.

A typical role of a dietitian involves:

  • To assess clients’ health and diet
  • To advise patients on healthy eating habits
  • To counsel patients and make them adapt a healthy eating pattern
  • To evaluate the effects of the suggested diet and make necessary changes
  • To keep up-to-date information on the latest in the nutrition science sector
  • To document report on patient progress

For instance, a patient suffering from high blood pressure may be guided on how to make necessary dietary changes to keep a tab on the blood pressure. The key would be to work on a diet that is low on salt and high on nutrition. For a diabetes patient, a diet low in sugar needs to be prepared.

Diploma in nutrition and diet planning

Job opportunities for a certified professional are galore. You can work full time or part time as a Nutritionist / Diet Planner. You get the freedom to be self-employed. As an independent dietitian you need to spend time in marketing your name. Also, you need to work hard in setting up your practice and preparing information materials for clients. However, if you choose to work with a healthcare organization, you can focus only at what you are best at, no need to go out and attain clients.

It is important to first get your certification. Most dietitians and nutritionists have a diploma in nutrition and diet planning. In addition to a certification, you need to possess skills such as, listening skills, organizational skills, problem-solving skills and good communication skills.
