The witty remarks of Tyrion Lannister, the flamboyance of Jaime Lannister, the fieriness of Daenerys from the Game of Thrones, the nonchalance of Escobar, the grit of Boyd and the promiscuity of Pascal from Narcos are too exciting and entertaining to resist. I’ll give you that. Netflix, the shows it streams and the shows being aired on TV these days like Suits, Silicon Valley, and House of Cards etc. are creating a whole new generation of couch potatoes reminiscent of the 90’s. The only difference is, these couch potatoes are a little more intellectually inclined but are couch potatoes nevertheless.

Its easy to become one these days with such high quality drama being easily available to all. For most of us, and this is my confession too, watching an episode of these artful beauties is what we look forward to at the end of the day. The question however is, at what cost. Watching and re-watching episodes upon episodes of Netflix and TV is driving us away from one of the most significant aspects of our lives, learning. In this age where information is ubiquitous, being redundant and ignorant is not just a sin but can also be disastrous. How? Let me tell you. The reason why you watch Netflix and shows similar to the ones streamed therein is because you have a taste for intelligence, which means that you are, in some way or the other, intelligent. Now, you’re most likely in the age group between 20 – 40, employed or have your own means of livelihood. As you are young, intelligent and an earning individual, you need to be doing a lot more than just whetting your senses with doses of GOT, House of Cards and Narcos. You.. no, let me correct that, we need to learn, update and develop.

If we look at some of the most influential and successful people alive today, we see that they all invest in themselves. What do they invest? Time. The most valuable investment anybody can ever make is the investment in oneself. You need to make time for learning. It can be anything, a new subject, more information and updates in your existing subject, a hobby, current affairs, latest developments in your industry/sphere of work etc. The more you learn, the more you will be able to understand and understanding is the key to expanding horizons. Look around in your office, almost all the managers are MBAs but from non-business oriented educational backgrounds. Some are IT engineers and some are Mechanical but they are in managerial positions today because they didn’t say "Hey, I’m an engineer now. No more learning to be done. Let’s start work." Instead they thought it prudent, and rightly so, to continue their education while being employed or otherwise. This is just one example and not everybody needs an MBA (There’s a lot of them anyways) but you need to start somewhere and here are a few tips:

  • List down the things that you really like doing or are passionate about
  • Research on them and find out if you need to start those as a beginner or if you already acquainted, the way ahead.
  • Network with like-minded people, people that share your passions and zeal to learn more and get practically involved.
  • Do Spend time in learning, improving and/or mastering that new technology, course, language or sport you think will add value to your professional and personal life.

And while you do all this, let Houzkare take care of your domestic chores right from cleaning and mopping to the dishes and trash.
