TEFL Certification Philippines: A Teaching Profession for the Future
Posted: Jul 20, 2016
TEFL is the abbreviation for ‘Teaching English as a Foreign Language.’ It is a course for individuals who want to teach English to non-native speakers from and in foreign countries. It is one of the fastest growing educational fields across the globe that presents immense opportunities to aspirants who want to teach English abroad. The certification is given to the people who are not only eligible for the course but also fulfill the minimum requirements. To teach English in foreign countries the TEFL course is required as the schools and language training institutes want only trained and qualified people to do the job.
After receiving TEFL certification you do not need any other educational degree to teach English in many countries. However, in countries like Spain, Japan, and Argentina, a TEFL certification must be augmented by authorized and appropriate college degrees in education or teaching. Only a candidate who fulfills these criteria is considered eligible to teach English as a foreign language.
According to the international standards, a professional TEFL certification must meet these standards to teach in abroad. It involves:
- A minimum of 100 hours of coursework.
- At least 6 to 20 hours of teaching and observation with a non-native English speaker.
- An accredited curriculum with a recognized and independent organization in the field.
- Instruction provided by a qualified instructor.
All the recognized international TEFL institutions and TEFL certification courses meet these standards. To find a teaching job with a TEFL certification, you have to register for the course and go to the location where the course is taught. Receive your training and certification and after that, you can start looking for a job that can fulfill your aspirations.
The procedure seems easy at first glance, but requires a high level of dedication and a willingness to be of service as a teacher. For many people, it is not easy to go and study abroad for a long period of time. You are not just going abroad; you are moving your life there. There are other technicalities to consider like you have to enroll at least 90 days in advance so that your spot is secured and you get the time to make all the necessary arrangements. You should time your course with regional hiring seasons. To know about hiring seasons, visa availability, and interview length, you can talk to the TEFL advisor. Generally, a certification course takes 4 weeks and once you arrive in your destination country the interviews and hiring process takes 1 to 3 weeks. This task is easier said than done, as other candidates will be doing the same thing and the number applications for such sessions may be very high. Also, make sure that you are getting proper guidance about hiring and jobs from onsite staff. The certificate holders usually start working from the second week of their certification.
As is clearly evident, the procedure to get the ball rolling is fairly arduous but managing to go through it successfully will definitely present great opportunities in front of you.
A TEFL certification is a great career opportunity. You can go to various places, meet different people and experience new cultures. You will get a chance to remove the communication barrier among various cultures and people with different sensibilities. It may not seem that way, but such a life is rewarding and also brings the world closer
