Most of us are familiar with this prevalent phrase. The irony is that this phrase which had originated out of a genuine concern has now only become a pretty way of saying good night. Most of us twitch at the thought of a six or eight legged creature scurrying past. However, little do we realize that one of the most notorious parasites and the most heinous looking too, that are arbovirus hosts live in unkempt and ill maintained beds. Just thought of your bed in a very different way or looked at it with a sneer? Well, this is just the beginning.

Bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed exclusively on blood. They’re like the vampires of the insects. Edward from Twilight doesn’t seem so hot now does he ladies? To add to our problems, this little baddie prefers human blood and thrives in warm locations frequented by its host i.e. us. Places like beds, drawers, cupboards etc. are the favourite hangouts of these parasites. Hence, the name "Bed Bugs".

Bed bugs have been feeding on human blood for thousands of years now. They were said to be eradicated in the mid-20th century but resurfaced a little later. This time, they had come to stay. They have now developed biological mechanisms that mellow the effect of pesticides and other insecticides used to eradicate them. Don’t panic, there are still many ways we can prevent them from sharing our beds.

The best and the most effective way of preventing a bed bug outbreak according to scientists and experts is to keep your bedding very clean and tidy. Seems very obvious doesn’t it? But this is where the catch is. Most of us think of cleaning and maintaining our bedding as a routine chore tended to only once we wake up and before we crash in. We do not attach the importance necessary in keeping bedding truly "clean" and hygienic. It is without a doubt true that most of us do not have the luxury of time to perform these seemingly trivial chores the way they ought to be i.e. in a scientific, professional and expert manner.

Did you know that in the United States the menace of bed bugs is so huge that they have special dogs that detect the presence and extent of bed bug infestation? Bed bugs are as big a nuisance as drugs there! Adopting everything western including our lifestyles will certainly entail the consequences too so don’t be alarmed if bed bug infestation becomes a household topic. Wise people have always said that prevention is better than cure but wiser people have acted and not just spoken. So its time we wised up and started availing professional help to maintain our homes, to let them be the comfortable, cozy and beautiful refuge they are.
