If you think fashion stylists and personal stylists are basically the same thing, you're not alone. The terms sound very similar so it's logical to suppose they would refer to the same thing. However, you may be surprised to discover that a fashion stylist and personal stylist actually do two very different jobs. Here's the skinny on what each is and what exactly it is they do.

Fashion Stylist

Also sometimes referred to as wardrobe stylist, fashion stylists mostly work on the sets of photo and video shoots. (A stylist may or may not be involved with choosing the theme for the photo shoot or video.) The stylist's main job is to pull together clothing and accessories for the models in the shoot to wear that are appropriate for the chosen theme. These wardrobe items might come from PR showrooms or from stores of the stylist's choosing. A fashion stylist must also dress the models and ensure everything fits to perfection, looks incredible and fits with the creative team's overall vision of what the photo shoot or video should be. If something should rip or need repairing, it's the fashion stylist's job to fix it and make it right.

Personal Stylist

While a fashion stylist is concerned with pulling together looks that are best for a given project, personal stylists are concerned with pulling together looks that are best for a given client. Clients can find a personal stylist online or in person. Either way, when you hire a personal stylist, the session should begin with a consultation so your stylist can get to know you. From there, a wide variety of services are available such as:

  • Body type consultation. A personal stylist's main goal is to help you look and feel like a million bucks. A big part of that is helping you discover what clothing works best for your body and how to put together flattering outfits.
  • Closet cleanout. If you've ever dreamed of having an organized closet that contains only items that look great on you, this is the service for you.
  • Wardrobe update. Once that closet is cleaned out, you're going to need some new threads. A wardrobe update is when your stylist pulls together outfits for you to try on in a pre-arranged fitting room. The stylist may also walk you through one or more stores to show you how to pull together looks for yourself.
  • Special occasion. Going on a trip? Have a job interview or hot date? Going to a wedding or getting married? Sometimes just an outfit or two are all you need and a personal stylist can help you choose an outfit that will rock.

If you simply can't afford a full session with a personal stylist, you can usually opt for a personalized style box subscription. Style boxes are a fantastic way to get personalized pieces at an affordable price.

Because fashion stylists sometimes work as personal stylists, things can get confusing. Just remember: a fashion stylist makes models look their best but a personal stylist will make you look your best. For more information visit: http://www.carrieasby.com/category/stylist/
