My Mom's First Miniature Garden

My mom and I have always enjoyed crafting together. We are the type of people who like to dive headfirst into projects and we thought miniature gardening would be a great way to express ourselves. However, it took about a year for mom to jump into planting a fairy garden. Last summer, she actually went to the greenhouse with me and bought a bunch of accessories to create her own miniscape. She had some fun ideas with a container in mind that used her mini garden as a centerpiece on the outside deck table. The accessories she bought were adorable and classic - they were cute and playful and that was exactly what my mom was looking for.

Since the fairy garden accessories were purchased towards the end of last summer, mom waited a year to create her first mini fairyscape and it seemed a little daunting for the first time miniature gardener. She learned there were a lot of small, but vital pieces when she started a project like this from scratch, especially a mini one. It was helpful to watch videos and read blog articles with "how to" information.

As soon as summer came along, we spent about a month looking for the perfect container she envisioned to start the project. At last, mom settled on a wide, pastel blue planter with the look of braided rope on the outside. The mini landscape project began. After filling the planter with potting soil, mom created dimension by using the soil to mound a hill in the background. Then she proceeded to construct a walkway by laying down small sheets of weed barrier and sprinkling sand on top. The addition of small paver stones provided a path of stepping stones for the fairies. The final touch was designing a miniature scale patio, for the fairies to rest, that was lined with fairy pebbles.

Planning to fill in the remaining space with miniature plants, mom placed her order online from the greenhouse. Surprisingly the plants arrived before the plans were even finalized. My mom was still deciding on where she wanted the accessories to rest permanently when the packaged carrying the plants came in the mail. Since Father's Day was only a week away and mom wanted the fairy garden as a centerpiece, within a few days mom had planted the tiny and delicate flowers around the fairy house, wishing well, and bistro set. All the final touches resulted in a pleasing miniature garden.

The day she completed the miniature garden my mom sent a picture to my sisters and me. We were all excited to see her newly planted fairy garden. Father's Day had arrived. When we all gathered for the big day my mom had her latest project front and center as we sat outside and enjoyed our pork chops and cheeseburgers. I have a feeling that miniature fairy gardens will always be a part of our family celebrations and memories.
