Writing for online publishing is in many ways different from writing for an offline publication. It makes sense to arm yourself with knowledge and skills that can optimize your content not just for an online audience but for search engines, too. If you are new to writing onsite content, you should be able to use the following guidelines to optimize your website, find the best targeted keywords, and make sure that those keywords are maximized from the perspective of conversion and user optimization:

Title tags

These may not be visible on web pages, but they are among the most important factors that can affect your on-site optimization efforts. Keep these in mind when writing title tags:

  • Keep it under 65 characters while ensuring that the most crucial keywords appear ahead of less important ones.
  • Keep branding consistent. Make sure your company's name is seen at all times.
  • Include keywords at the beginning of title tags.

Headings

Be sure to use one H1 heading on every page to emphasize important keywords. Remember to synchronize the headings with title tags to effectively target primary terms. Use H2 to H5 headings for secondary terms, but use them as sub-headings. Your content must have unique headings and title tags to target different keyword variations.

Meta description tags

Like title tags, these tags do not directly appear on a web page, but they can appear as part of the results when search engines list your page. Hence, try to incorporate targeted keywords in the Meta description tags, too. Moreover, write to attract readers to click your listing when the Meta tag is displayed in the search results page.

Internal links

Internal links are used for cross-linking related content. They help your web pages rank in search engines, too. Add them when talking about a particular topic where further information can be found on another page in your website, but do not overusing them in a copy. Instead, link to small selections of pages that are relevant to the content. To further optimize the page, make sure the links contain targeted keywords instead of merely placing, 'click here'.

Keyword usage in the content

Write your copy for web readers and consider an online call-to-action. Use primary keywords within the first paragraph of your content, and use variations of the keywords for the rest of the content. Aim for about three to five instances when including the keywords in-context. Italicize or embolden important keywords to emphasize them in a page, but be sure not to overdo it. Consider using keyword descriptive ALT tags as well.

Keyword density

While targeted keywords and their variations need to be repeated, you should do this sparingly to keep your content sounding natural. Keyword stuffing is a big no-no.

Images

Name your images appropriately instead of using numbers or random letters. That way, they can easily be found by search engines especially when your readers are doing an image search. Remember to use the alt attribute to optimize relevant images with targeted keywords.
