A Quick Review of the Honda HR-V VTi-S
Posted: Aug 02, 2016
The new Honda HR-V has been an amazing success for Honda, since its introduction to the Australian market in February 2015. This car has become a star attraction to the Honda brand in the small SUV segment. However, the SUV market is constantly evolving and the Honda HR-V, Australia based drivers have come to love needs to keep pace. Today, we will take a closer look at the Honda HR-V VTi-S which is at the apex in the range for value and features.
The Position in the HR-V Range
The Honda HR-V VTi-S sits slap bang in the middle of the HR-V lineup. The price is $27,990 plus on roads, which makes it cheaper than the Qashqai ST by $500. The car is solid, practical and spacious for everyday use. This model is positioned to offer the best value for money versus the level of specification across the HR-V range.
Inside the HR-V VTi-S
The feel inside the cabin is definitely at the Premium end of the scale. We have become used to the high build quality in Honda cars over the years, but the HR-V VTi-S is a great place to sit. There is soft padding all around the fascia with glossy black and silver highlights. Everything looks nice and futuristic right down to the touch operated digital climate controls. There is an electronic parking brake and an incredible amount of cabin storage and other clever touches. The cup holders expand to fit larger bottles of water, there are 12v inputs in the front and rear, and a pair of USB sockets and an HDMI input up front. The seating position may be higher than most drivers are used to, but the additional visibility is welcome. There are other useful features, such as automatic rain sensing wipers, push button start, climate control, cruise control, a six speaker sound system, six airbags, a pair of ISOFIX child seat fixing points, a 7" touchscreen, 17" wheels and a three angle reversing camera.
So Much Storage
There is 437L of boot storage space in the Honda HR-V which is considerably more than its rival the Mazda CX-3 at 264L. The storage possibilities expand even further thanks to the Magic Seat system. The rear seats can flip at a 60:40 ratio, but they also slide forwards to create even more room, and they can even be lifted up. In this configuration, the boot space extends from 437L to a massive 1,462L. There is also a space saver spare wheel under the floor and an additional 12V socket.
How Does the HR-V VTi-S Drive?
The HR-V VTi-S is a front wheel drive small SUV that is powered by a 1.8L i-VTEC four cylinder petrol engine. This powerplant generates 105kW of power and 172 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and there is no manual gearbox available. The combined fuel consumption is 6.6L/100km, and it will run on cheaper 91 RON fuel which is great for your pocket. One would expect the car to feel underpowered, but this is not the case at all. The CVT works well at anticipating gear changes and the engine supplies adequate power when required. As a front wheel drive SUV it is not recommended for extensive off road use, but it will handle a slightly rough trail with ease. The handling feels solid and travelling through city traffic is a breeze.
