Combination of Academic Intervention Models Utilized by Irene Kepler
Posted: Aug 04, 2016
- Irene Kepler holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s Degree in Social Work, with certifications as a School Social Worker, as a Bull Proofing Trainer for Schools K through 8, and is a specialist in Crisis Intervention and in Trauma and Loss Intervention. Irene Kepleris well-versed both through academic training and field experience in the principles of crisis intervention, the first of which is that the intervention must occur as soon as possible after the event. Independent function will be enabled by the immediate availability of resources. It is important to help the victim or victims’ process and express feelings about the event which has occurred, and equally important that the social worker assist the victim to problem solve, helping to restore self-reliance. Returning the victim(s) to independent functioning can be facilitated by assisting problem solving and structuring and activating strategies, another part of restoring self-reliance.
Roberts 7 Stage Crisis Intervention Model, the SAFER-R Model and Lerner and Shelton’s 10 step stress & trauma management protocol have all been used to manufacture a general approach to crisis response. Roberts’ ACT model was a response to the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attacks, a three stage approach known as the Assessment Crisis Intervention Trauma Treatment. The assessment stage, determining the needs of victims and referring to appropriate services involves triage assignments of emergency inpatient, outpatient treatment, private therapy, or no referral. Crisis assessment is gathering information on each individual’s environment, interpersonal relationships and current state. Biosocial assessment helps determine the immediate level of stress, occurring problems and severity of crisis.
The ACT 7 Stage Model attempts to assess the level of suffering from the crisis, identify the client’s life problem leading to the crisis through client anecdotes, and evaluating the client’s coping mechanisms during the client’s description of the situation. Confronting feelings and emotions will be an outgrowth of the relation of the victim’s story, and the counselor will work with the victim through inappropriate responses and thoughts to healthier ones. The counselor will attempt to help the victim explore alternative coping mechanisms, perhaps by referring to what has worked in the past in other situations. The formulation of a treatment plan then helps support the victim’s empowerment and return to normal functioning through follow-up appointments.
The SAFER-R Model of crisis intervention technique emphasizes stabilization, acknowledgement, understanding, adaptive coping, restoration of functioning and referrals, and is used in conjunction with the ACT Model to help restore baseline functioning.
