Robotics is the dynamic field which is the breeding ground for creativity and innovation. It involves the design, functional use and maintenance of robots. If you have the creative mind and love towards the machines, then you should think of making your career in Robotics.

Robotics Engineer

A Robotics Engineer carries out the designing of the robots, developing the programs and applications tasks that allow them to function.

Duties of a robotics engineer

  • Building, configuring and testing of the robots.
  • Analyzing and evaluating the prototypes and robotics systems.
  • Reviewing the design calculations and cost estimations.
  • Educating plans path for the developed robots.
  • Designing software systems to control the overall robotics systems.
  • Performing research into the design and operation.

Required skills

The Programming MindsetBasically, robotics programming interacts with hardware and electronics. Therefore, in order to become the good roboticists, you must have the programming mindset. It is the pretty essential skill for the Robotics because a Robotic Engineer can be involved at any stage of the programming abstraction.Technology DesignA robotics engineer should be proficient enough to create the design that actually works in the real life. If something doesn’t work out, robotics engineer should be able to figure out the possible outcomes and should be able to propose the effective solutions.Problem Solving MindsetYou should have Complex problem solving skills, Foreseeing problems and fixing them on their arrival. One must posses the troubleshooting capabilities, whenever anything goes wrong.System ThinkingAs the robots are very complicated systems, you have to be good at mechanics, electronics, programming, sensing and cognition as well.

To avalanche your career, the entry level careers in robotics engineering require a Secondary level education in Science subjects(Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics).

After that you can either pursue, B.Tech Mechatronics Engineering which is the specialization of robotics or you can do your bachelor’s degree in any stream of engineering and after that you can switch to Masters in Robotics. Choice is up to you.

Earnings

There is no limited salary of a Robotics Engineer, if you have skills and if your contribution level to the industry is more than the expected, then you can expect to have the heft package. It’s the skills and versatility of the obotics Engineer which decides the Pay Scale.

In India, an average, Robotics Engineers who works on the designation of Design Engineer can expect a starting salary of 5-6 Lakhs per annum which eventually scale up with the experience.

Employment Opportunities

The typical industries that Robotics Engineers plan and Develop and can have the employment opportunities are in the following industries.

  • Aerospace
  • Nuclear
  • Auto
  • Mining
  • Agriculture
  • Space
  • Power Plant Maintenance
  • Medicine
  • Military

In all the above industries, usually the manufacturers are one of the biggest employers of robotics engineer. However, there are wide range of tasks which Robotics engineer can handle.

For example, you can either work to develop the robots that are used in the entertainment industry or with NASA to develop robots to carry out experiments in space. Check out the career profiles of NASA Robotics Engineers here.
