Ever wondered where does the water from your washer, bathtub, and kitchen sink go? By gravity, the accumulated water goes through channels or a system of pipes known as "Sewerage" and gets pumped to your nearest local station and treatment plants where it is purified for re-use. This process of purifying water is known as "Sewage Water Treatment."

Sewage Water Treatment involves a series of processes conducted to remove contamination from septic water, grease traps and likewise water waste. For centuries, man has been using a drainage system to channelize the waste water; however, due to absence of a sewage water treatment process, the system usually ended up causing more pollution and contamination. And since proper effluent disposal is extremely important for the overall protection of public health and sanitation, municipalities and authorities adopt strict measures to treat sewage, septic systems, etc. before they become incurable threat to health.

Different Methods Used For Sewage Water Treatment:

  • On-Site Disposal System: All the waste from your toilet, bathroom and laundry goes through pipes to a septic tank. From the septic tank, this slug is passed to a leach or French drain through a channel of disposal drain. In this system, the wastewater is soaked into surrounding soil. Some soils, such as clay, do not allow good absorbance. On-Site Disposal System cannot be installed at all the locations especially the areas with regular floor, areas with high water table, areas with large amount of wastewater and nearby drinking water supplying systems.
  • Wastewater Disposal System: Here, wastewater from a community is carried by pipes to a "lagoon" (lagoon is a large reservoir for collecting wastewater). There is no leach or French drain involved in this system.
  • Full Sewage System: All the waste from toilet, shower, and laundry is pumped into Lagoons through sewer pipes. The sewage enters the lagoon without treatment and goes through a series of cutting blades which help churning the solid materials before they enter the lagoon.
  • Dissolved Air Floatation: It involves introduction of extremely high air pressure to a tank that contains wastewater, creating bubbles which cause suspended materials to float above; these materials are subsequently removed.
  • Apart from the above-mentioned methods, there are several other treatments that help in enhancing the clarity, quality and purity of the wastewater and make it reusable.
