Uber is spreading like wildfire in many countries of the world, Operating in more than 310 cities and 58 countries. One cannot but take interest in the nature of its growth. The business is one that we can rightfully describe as "fast-growing". This is why in this post; we will bring to you the Top Uber markets as it stands.

THE OBVIOUS 3:

  1. United States

Uber, as it stands, now has their services delivered across 183 cities in the U.S. Being that this is its home country, one does not need to think too far to understand why expansion in the US is happening smoothly and steadily. As at last year, the company already had claims to ride-sharing agreements in 42 states. Also, Uber has pushed the business further by forming various alliances that will strengthen the hold of the firm in its own homeland. One of such alliances is the one formed last year with aviation authorities to allow it pick riders from San Diego Airport. Uber helps local economies by operating a system that creates options for low-income earners who want to enjoy convenient travel and economic opportunities for Uber Partners and drivers who get to choose their own schedules and be their own boss. Some of the popular uber services in the U.S are:

  • UberX
  • UberPool
  • Uber Black ( Uber Black Car service )
  • Uber Select
  1. China

It has been said that at its current pace, China might just overtake U.S as the largest Uber market in the near future. This seems true as Uber, in July last year, announced that over 1,000,000 rides are taking place every single day in China alone. Although Uber launched in China in 2013 and is not up to 3 years old, it’s very stunning that the country has come out as one of the largest markets. According to reports, three of the most active Uber cities in China have surpassed New York in regards to daily rides taken – those cities are Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Chengdu. Uber’s CEO, Travis Kalanick, recently attested to the fact that over 200,000 Hangzhou residents are becoming Uber riders every week.

In Guangzhou, People’s Uber is the lowest cost service, although UberX, UberXL, and Uber BLACK are available as well.

According to UberEstimate.com, the current pricing structure for the "People’s Uber" car service in Guangzhou, China is:

  • No base fare cost
    • 0.35 per minute (time spent in car)
    • 1.60 per KM (distance travelled in car)
    • 8 cancellation fee
  • No service fees
  • And a minimum overall fare cost of ¥9.
  1. India

Uber is also causing a great revolution in the way a large section of urban Indians travel – affecting the country’s economy with the millions of jobs it creates as well. In India, the average monthly income of an Uber partner (Uber driver in this case) falls between Rs 60,000 and Rs 75,000, depending on the varying number of monthly trips completed. Sometimes when the month is good, some lucky drivers count up to 6 zeroes. In a recent IndiaTimes interview, Travis Kalanick was asked to comment on the stance of India as regards daily rides and revenues, he replied saying:

"Uber is about serving cities. It is an obvious step for us to go to India and roll out transportation in different cities, put our heart and soul there. India is our third largest country behind the US and China and it's growing pretty fast. Based on sheer number of people, over time, it could be possible India surpasses one of them."

THE TWO ‘NOT-SO-OBVIOUS’ ONES (MY OPINION):

Even though Uber has only given major hints about the top three markets, I am positive about the growth of some particular countries based on personally gathered stats.

First of my two ‘promising’ Uber markets is Australia with Uber claiming to have registered more than one million users, the Uber business in Australia seems to be heading up there in terms of Market size too. Although Uber has faced some challenges since it first launched in Sydney in 2012, the company has grown and has put a lot into making sure that more and more Australians see reasons to try the ‘Uber life’ out. An example of this is the free ice cream delivery Uber gave several users in 18 Australian cities in July 2015 – this was a nice way to mobilize more users to try out the app at that time. In Brisbane alone, it took Uber just about 18 months to complete 2.5 million rides between 2014 and 2015. The company also celebrated 10 million rides in Australia in 2015. Considering the size of the market and several other cities that Uber is yet to spread to, the possibility of expansion in the country is very high.

The second very promising market, (in my view) is South Africa. Being the largest Uber market in Africa at the moment, one cannot doubt the fact that the business in this area might mark a historic point in the spread of the Uber business in Africa as a whole. Since it launched in Johannesburg in September 2013, the company has slowly began to open up the African market to its ridesharing strategies. In South Africa alone, Uber is currently working Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria; meaning that it is housing 5 of the Nine Uber cities in Africa. These are reasonable reasons why SA is a market to watch-out for, as it is already playing in the rise of Uber business in Africa.

While the Uber business is fast growing and is aiming at even larger expansions, these are the current leading Uber markets in the world right now. However we expect that the growth of the business might see power changing hands in times to come.
