If you’re thinking of getting some new locks installed in your home or business and want to feel secure, read on to discover some security features that you should keep in mind when purchasing your new locks.

Bump Resistant Locks

"Bumping" is the use of a special key to "bump" open many commonly utilized pin-tumbler locks. Bump keys are easily accessible to anyone with a credit card and internet access at a very cheap price. A bump key leaves little to no evidence that it was even used on the lock and works almost as fast the correct key would. It is very important that you buy your home or business a high grade lock that is bump resistant. Ask your local locksmith in Reno about adding some security pins to your current locks or if you want something new, you can ask to install non-pin-tumbler locks or a high security lock/deadbolt to prevent a burglar’s access to your home. It may also be a smart idea to have chain latch attached to your door as well.

Key Control

Maintaining key control is a huge part of business, home and car security. It is an organized security system to control of master keys within a business’s lock system. Key control includes documentation to ensure specific keys are only used by those who have been authorized. If you’ve ever seen a key that says "Do Not Duplicate" it was a key for this type of system.

Pick Resistant Locks

Locks that possess security pins are more difficult to pick open than locks without. Security pins can come in a few shapes including spool pins, mushroom pins and serrated pins. These pins make it extremely difficult for a lock-picker to open a lock, although with practice it is still possible for them to open. Adding a security pin is normally can be done during a lock rekey service.

Another great way to prevent anyone from picking their way into your house or business is to purchase a lock that has second set of pins so that the key for it will work like 2 keys at once.

Force Resistant Locks

There are locks that are resistant to strong forces such as drilling, kicking and/or sawing. These locks may have jamb enforcers or jimmy proof deadbolts or spin-collars or expanding bolts or a reinforced strike box. Spin collars can resist torque attacks by wrenches or other large/heavy objects. Ask your local Reno locksmith what measures would work best with your door lock system.

Hopefully after reading through these security features, you have a better idea of what choices are available to you. Your locksmith should be able to help you further discover efficient brands and security grades of a lock for your personal needs.
