The Nomex flight suit is built to last because it is made with quality materials. To get the maximum life out of the suit as well as ensure that the various features of the suit remain intact for years, it must be properly taken care of and maintained. It is best to keep them away from sunlight when they are not in use as well as keep it in its original packaging. Here are ways to keep your Nomex flight suit intact:

  • In order not to expose your Nomex flight suit to chemicals that can compromise its flame resistance feature, it should be kept in a clean place. Flammable chemicals like oils and paint can affect Nomex materials significantly if it is not removed.
  • The Nomex material should be washed separately from other materials. This will prevent the material from flammable contaminants (like lint and pill) that may be present in other materials.
  • Regular household laundry detergent designed for use at a temperature of 60°C (140°F) or less is recommended for Nomex materials. Detergents that suit this specification wash Nomex materials clean without bleaching its color.
  • Only oxygen-based bleach should be used on Nomex materials. Although chlorine bleach will not affect the flame resistance of the suit, the material can lose its color and strength with time.
  • Although Nomex material may be machine dried, the temperature of the machine should be relatively low. A temperature between 60°C (140°F) and 71°C (160°F) will sufficiently dry the suit without excessive shrinking or color loss.
  • Nomex flight suit should be rinsed in water with a softness less than 4.0 grains. Hard water will deposit minerals on the material as well as destroy the flame resistance feature of the material.

Additional measures that should be taken include:

  • To ensure effective removal of potentially flammable contaminants, the Nomex flight suit should be pretreated before wash
  • Because Nomex needs space for thorough rinse, the washing machine should not be overloaded.Unless your Nomex flight suit is super dirty, a normal water setting should be used to wash it. Then you may need to use hot water.
  • When your Nomex flight suit rips or tear, it should be patched up with Nomex sewing thread, patches, fabric, and zipper tapes.

Most importantly, if all these maintenance measures cannot be adhered to, it is best to take it to a professional commercial laundry facility to keep the suit safe from flammable contaminants.
