Helpful Tips for Buying Batteries

There are an astounding number of batteries currently available on the market. You will stumble upon all sorts of brand names and advertising claims when you shop for batteries. Surprisingly enough, buying a good pack of batteries has become one of the most puzzling aspects of modern consumerism. We all need batteries, especially in this device-dependent age. Yet, we still don’t know how to shop for good battery.

The best brand of battery for you will depend on your needs and the type of battery you need. The specs for an AA battery can significantly differ from a rechargeable battery. So, there are no set guidelines as to which battery you should buy. In that case, follow the below tips to spend your money on the best battery:

Ignore the Brand Names

Buying a Duracell battery may not necessarily be better than buying a cheaper version of the same battery. Some tests have shown that there is no positive correlation between the price of a battery and the performance. What matters is the type you buy. However, some brand name batteries may offer "advanced" batteries that might be more suitable for certain situations. Additionally, brand reputation matters as well. Duracell may be a better option over a generic brand simply because of its reputation. Still, rather than the brand, you should worry about performance and the voltage.

Mind What the Battery is Made Out Of

Batteries are made out of different types of material, mainly lithium and alkaline. Alkaline batteries are cheaper. However, they also contain a liquid that is corrosive and harmful if it leaks outside. Generally speaking, lithium batteries are more stable. So, if you need the batteries to be inside the device for a long time, you should probably choose lithium batteries that won’t drain and leak out. If you need the battery for a device that is used almost every day, then cheaper alkaline batteries would be cost effective.

Be Aware that Performance is Largely the Same

Regardless of brand names and marketing claim, all batteries of the same kind—like AA or AAA—perform similarly. Some brands, like Energizer Advanced Lithium, might last slightly longer than others. But the price is not worth the extra perk. Therefore, when you shop for batteries, don’t fall for the marketing claims so easily. They all almost always perform the same. To be sure, search online for battery reviews before you make a purchase.

High Voltage Can be Harmful

Some battery tests have shown that some batteries issue a surprising amount of high voltage, usually around 1.5 volts. Some devices can’t handle this amount of voltage. So, if you know a certain device to be sensitive, be careful when you choose a battery. It’s best to purchase a battery known to issue a low voltage in such a scenario.

Stick with Manufacturer Recommendations

If you are shopping for batteries for a phone, a gaming device or a similar gadget, the manufacturer may have already recommended a type or brand of battery. If that’s the case, buy the recommended type of battery. It will most likely have the right voltage amount and output that is safe and necessary for the device.

Now you know how to shop for batteries. Don’t hesitate to read professional reviews of batteries to be sure. Also, once your batteries have drained, dispose of them responsibly.
