Look around, and you will realise that Digital Printing Technology has captivated almost every stream of your imagination. With billboards, hoardings, banners, etc. the use of Digital Print Technology has increased manifold over the past few decades. In the early days it was relatively easy to determine if a document was printed using an offset printer or a copier, but, with growth in technology, Digital Printers paved the way for high quality printing.

What Is Digital Printing?

Digital Printing can be classified as a method of producing prints using an electronic image. Through a Digital Printer, using ink, toner, inkjet or other pigment based dyes, an electronic file is presented in a physical form of dots that combine together to form an image.

Since a Digital Printer draws each page image for a print rather than using press plates to print an image, it needs no setup sheets, hence each sheet can be used to publish different images.

Advantages Of Digital Printing

  • Personalization: Digital Images can easily be personalised to suit a specific requirement. This feature of a Digital Printer allows the user to print personalised books, manual and JIT (Just-In-Time) printing records.
  • Multitasking: The main advantage of drawing an image through a Digital Printer is that it can easily perform multitasking. By multitasking what we mean is, the ability to easily print sets of multi-page documents, one set at a time.

How Does Digital Printing Work?

The initial phase of Digital Printing begins with creating an electronic document file. Using software such as Photoshop, Coral Draw etc. a Raster Graphic image file is created. A Raster is a grid of x and y coordinates that depicts an image in a printable format. Sometimes referred to as Bitmap, the information fed in such a file is directly mapped to a display grid. BMP, TIFF, GIF and JPEG are examples of raster image files.

Digital Printers make use of a variety of technologies to produce an image through wet or dry toner and inkjet based. A recent addition to these Digital Printing Devices is the use of Laser Printer. Laser Printers send pulses of light from a laser beam in the printer to create an image on a light sensitive surface. These images are formed in a dot matrix pattern, generally 240x240 dots per inch, 300x300 dots per inch, etc.
