Snow holidaymakers often complain that there is not much to do in winter resorts other than curl up by the fire in their pricey ski chalet. Morzine seems to be the exception to the rule in this regard, as the month of January sees the Alpine town come alive with a number of activities sure to please start-of-year guests staying in the region.

The main event going on in the region at the beginning of 2014 has, of course, to do with ski, and might already constitute reason enough for even non-practicing winter sports aficionados to rent a ski chalet: Morzine is hosting the FIS Alpine Ski Races, which will see a number of professional skiers take to the slopes of the resort in a variety of events. In a field of the sporting world which is often left off of television in favour of more popular sports, this no doubt constitutes a golden opportunity for fans of skiing to see some of their idols up close and in action! This event takes places on the Pleney from the 6th to the 9th of January, and mostly focuses around slalom trials, so fans of this particular type of skiing should make sure not to miss it.

For those for whom skiing does not appeal, the town does also holds something of interest. The French resort traditionally celebrates the Russian Orthodox Christmas, and for a week at the start of January, its streets will be invaded with traditional activities linked to the date. Guests who enjoy discovering about customs and traditions of different cultures around the world should therefore make sure to step out from the fireside for at least a moment during this time: all around their ski chalet, Morzine will be lit up with their own version of Russian Christmas!

Aside from these two large, attention-grabbing events, a surprising number of smaller occurrences will be making sure that the old belief that resort life is dull is proven wrong. Nearly every day of the month of January holds a new surprise in store for guests staying at a ski chalet. Morzine will be host to a large number of concerts, dances, hikes, sporting events and even educational visits throughout the first month of 2014, and the programme is varied enough to offer something for everyone.

A recurring highlight of the Morzine cultural calendar for December 2014 will be the ‘visit to the cowshed’, where interested parties may become acquainted with the traditional French Alpine method of making cheese. Those less interested in dairy products can, in the meantime, head to any number of live music gigs, hockey games, drinks and dancing evenings and even a game of Mountain Laser, an Alps-specific version of laser tag!

It is clear, then, that Morzine is anything but a dull, sleepy mountain resort, as guests in January will be able to attest to!
