Understanding Scope of Neurology in Medical Profession

For becoming a Neurologist, after completion of Bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery, Candidate has to study MD/ MS/ DNB or DM in Neurology. Normally it takes 10 – 12 years to become a complete neurologist. Other than Neurologist, there is also a chiropractic neurologist who serves in the same manner in consulting but difference is that, therapies or application of chiropractic does not involve drugs or interventional or surgical techniques.

If we analyze salary of a Neurologist Job in India, then a fresher can easily get Rs. 60,000/- to Rs. 1 lac, while in Government Sector a neurologist can earn Rs. 2 lacs to 5 lacs. People have common misconception that, neurologist and neuro-surgeon are same profession. But in fact there is a vast difference between these two medical professions. A Neurologist is specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases or conditions of the brain and nervous system along with supporting systems and tissues. On ther hand a Neurosurgeon uses therapies like endoscopic microsurgery, radiation, traditional open surgery for the treatment of neurological conditions like trauma, tumors, strokes, aneurysms and many other conditions of the spine, brain and skull base areas.

Now days there are various sub-specialty and fellowships available which are offered by Medical Colleges in the field of stroke & neurophysiology, epilepsy, movement disorders, sleep, neuromuscular disorders, neuro-immunology. But most of the Doctors wish to pursue this sub and super specialty in mostly abroad, which can give doctors an edge over others."

  • V80.01 – Special screening for traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • V80.09 – Special screening for other neurological conditions (Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s)
