Turmeric is a spice that is often used as a food flavoring in Asian dishes. It has a warm slightly bitter taste and it belongs to the ginger family. Also known as Indian saffron, haridra or haldi, it is the main ingredient and what gives the bright yellow color to curry powder.

Turmeric is grown in Asian countries and has commonly been a part of Asian food for ages.

Turmeric contains the chemical curcumin. Curcumin is a strong anti-inflammatory. It has been used for thousands of years to treat skin conditions and heal wounds. Turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years as a medicinal herb as well as a spice. Turmeric has been called "the internal healer" in Ayurveda. One of the most common home remedies for injuries especially internal pain is drinking turmeric mixed with a glass of warm milk. Turmeric has been used to treat joint pain including Arthritis for thousands of years. It reduces pain and swelling and helps the healing process. Turmeric has also been shown to alleviate skin irritation, redness and itching caused by eczema, a natural skin cleanser for sensitive skin. Research has also shown that there are lower rates of certain types of cancer in countries where people eat curcumin at levels of about 100 to 200 mg a day over long periods of time.

Turmeric has been an absolutely essential spice in every home in India for centuries. Salt, Chili powder, cumin, coriander and turmeric are the 5 essential spices to cook any Indian meal. Needless to say, turmeric holds a special place of honor in the Indian kitchen.

Turmeric also holds a special place in the Indian wedding tradition. The Big Fat Indian Wedding can last several days and include dozens of rituals. There is a "Haldi ceremony" usually held the morning of the wedding at both the bride and groom's home. The family members will apply a paste made with Turmeric, Sandlewood, chick pea flour, milk or rose water to their feet, hands, arms and face. Turmeric is considered auspicious and a way for the family to bless the couple for their new life. When the paste is washed off, it acts as a natural skin cleanser and leaves the skin smooth and glowing. In addition to being a natural product for skin care, its soothing properties help calm the nerves and balance the mood before the big event.

Turmeric which is widely referred to as Curcumin is highly anti-inflammatory, so powerful that it matches the effectiveness of some anti-inflammatory drugs. Curcumin neutralizes free radicals and stimulates the body's natural antioxidant enzymes. Curcumin boosts levels of the brain hormone BDNF, or Brain Derived Neuropathic Factor, studies in mice have indicated that curcumin slows the effects of Alzheimer's. Curcumin's ability to reduce inflammation and oxidation are also important in preventing heart disease. Several studies indicate that curcumin could help prevent and perhaps even treat cancer.

Seasonal allergies and sinus infections are also alleviated by drinking turmeric tea. Add turmeric powder to warm water, mix lemon juice and honey and sip regularly. A mix of turmeric, coconut oil, baking soda and a little peppermint oil applied to teeth is a natural way to whiten teeth. Apply the mix to your teeth and let it stay for 3-5 minutes, then rinse.
