Two way players are becoming increasingly rare in today’s college football landscape. Coaches are afraid of injuries and over using some of their players. But still, some players are still able to get a shot to produce offensively and defensively. The University of Michigan is especially keen on this idea, allowing players like Charles Woodson and Jabrill Peppers show off their full skillsets. Now, senior cornerback Jourdan Lewis wants to be the next Wolverine to try it out.

Everyone knows Lewis is a more than capable cornerback for the Wolverines. He was the number one corner for the team last season as a junior and dominated the competition. He was able to record 52 total tackles on his opponents to go with 20 pass deflections. That is more than double the pass breakups he had the past two seasons combined. To top it off, Lewis also caused turnovers with two interceptions and one forced fumble. While his defensive skills are unquestioned, there are questions of what he could do on offense.

Lewis hasn’t played an offensive snap since he was a senior in high school. During that year, he played wide receiver and had over 750 receiving yards while catching six touchdowns. Those numbers are far from impressive but they do show that he can play the position. One thing Lewis has been able to show is an explosive ability in college. He has been a part of the return game at Michigan, returning kicks last season on a regular basis. On those kick returns, he averaged 29 yards per return, an above average number for a return man. And in high school, he had 3 return touchdowns as a senior.

While these stats prove that he is capable of making plays in space, it does not necessarily mean he can produce on the offensive side of the ball. That being said, if Jim Harbaugh can design plays on offense that would get Lewis space with the ball, he could prove to be a strong two-way player in 2016.
