Obesity has been the major concern among people in the last few years in India. Folks are seeking ways to get rid of this problem in order to live a quality life free of diseases. Those who succeeded have been lucky enough to fulfill their dreams. On the contrary, those who failed are struggling to gather bits and pieces of their lives so that they can bring some stability in it. Obesity is a complex disease that doesn’t come alone instead it is cluttered with a number of other diseases too like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, chronic backache, sleep apnea, GERD, arthritis etc. There is not only one reason that causes obesity but a number of them come together to give birth to this life-threatening disease like genetics, influence of people around you, distress, intake of some medications that lead to weight gain and inactive lifestyle.

To escape from the problem of obesity, people try weight loss treatment in India hoping to get desired results. There are both Surgical & Non-Surgical bariatric treatments for weight loss. You can consult with your doctor about the advantages and disadvantages of both & then accordingly go for the one that you find most suitable. Majority of the people initially opt for non-surgical weight loss treatment, that include ReShape Integrated Dual Balloon System followed by Intragastric Balloon, as it is a non-invasive and can be performed endoscopically. But only 1% of the persons are able to qualify for the treatment. It is highly successful method for losing weight and has been adapted all over the world. In this procedure, the patient is sedated and one or more saline-filled balloons are inserted in his stomach through mouth. These balloons make the person feel fuller soon leading him to intake lesser calories. This way it helps the patient to lose weight. After a time period of almost 6 months, the doctors deflate these balloons and remove them using second endoscopic procedure. The patient needs to follow lifestyle support program for at least a year.

For those who are not the candidates for non-surgical treatment for weight loss in India has to move ahead with the surgical options as they provide the patient with long-term weight loss.

There are mainly three types of surgical treatment for weight loss:

  1. Gastric Banding: In this procedure, your surgeon will reduce the size of your stomach by placing an inflatable silicone band around the top portion of your stomach. When you eat, you will feel full soon and thereby eat less. One continues to have normal absorption of all the nutrients and doesn’t cause any harm to the body.
  2. Gastric Bypass: In this method, your surgeon will surgically remove a portion of your stomach, thereby, reducing its size. Then a small segment of the small intestine is identified and removed. The surgeons then connect the remaining small intestine with the stomach and normal digestion takes place. After this surgery, one eats less and feels full immediately. It causes permanent changes in your digestive system.

3- Sleeve Gastrectomy: In this type of bariatric surgery, the surgeons permanently remove 75-85% of your stomach. They create a small sleeve like pouch that is connected to small intestine for normal digestion process to take place.

Whatever bariatric treatment you consider for obesity, the most important thing is to discuss with your doctor about the expected results before the surgery so that you are prepared in advance with the possible outcomes and don’t get distressed. It is also important for the patients to make lifestyle changes in their daily routine and diet for effective and long-term surgery results.
