How to Choose the Right Product Line for Your Bakery Business
Posted: Sep 09, 2016
Whether you’re a baking enthusiast or a professionally-trained pro, maybe it’s always been your dream to have your own bakery business. Maybe you’re an all-round baker and can make anything from awesome breads to pastries, or maybe you prefer sticking to only cake making. Whatever your dream, it’s important to have a crystal clear idea of what you plan to sell in your bakery. Cakesmiths sells baking tools and equipment, cake tins, and cake moulds online India and we’ve collated a few tips on how to choose the right product line for your bakery business.
1. Research:
Get as clear as an idea as to what exactly you want to sell. What do you envision for your bakery? Do you want to be an exclusively high-end cake shop or do you want to sell everything from baguettes to pies? What are existing bakeries selling? Is there a gap in the market?
2. Start with a niche:
While it’s great to be an all rounder, starting off with a niche of just one area is the number one key to having a business savvy and profitable bakery in the long run. While setting up your bakery as an entrepreneur, you will be juggling a multitude of hats while trying to maintain consistent and quality products. Focus on just one niche segment and become known for it. Think of a popular restaurant which serves healthy yet mouthwatering burgers, or the patisserie which is known for its exquisite macarons. Chances are, the started out with their star selling item and expanded to include other things on the menu. Remember, you can always expand your product line to include more delicious items later, when you’re bakery is becoming popular and your business is gaining more traction. Decide what you want to be known for.
3. Trial and error:
While you might have a fixed menu, you might discover that over time, your beloved cupcakes do not seem to be doing too well and have never really picked up, inspite of various different factors (such as location, season, customer range, etc). Maybe your cupcakes simply aren’t selling as well as the other items, even if the majority of feedback from customers give positive feedback and say that they taste great. Maybe you decide to make your product line more concise and stop selling cupcakes altogether, and focus on your other items. Whatever it is, it can be helpful to note feedback on improving your product line and also deciding what to stock up.
4. Feedback:
You might find that a huge majority of your customers actually prefer some extra whipped cream on your pie- you might realize that it’s a good idea to increase the quantity of whipped cream to your pies. It’s likely that you’ll get customers who request some modification to their order, and you might notice that with particular items, there is similar feedback for the same. If you are stuck with ideas of what to include or discard in your product line, try conducting a survey amongst your customers.
5. Keep abreast with the latest in the industry:
Check out what other bakeries are doing, the current trends in the baking world, and the latest industry news. Keep an inspiration board for ideas and new techniques that will continue to hone, refine and reinvigorate your bakery line. While you might not fancy an over-the-top dessert, you might get an idea as to how to use a particular technique, concept or style from the dessert for your own bakery. Being aware of what is happening will help you to continuously adapt and stay on top of your game.
Remember that as with any business, it is a combination of having personal goals, experimentation through trial and error, and good marketing skills that will help you decide what you do want to sell in your bakery.
