A 220 air conditioner window style cools your home while helping you manage your household’s energy costs. Below we present some of the most essential facts about window-type 220-volt air conditioners so you can choose one that best suits your needs.

What is a 220-volt window air conditioner?

Also known as room air conditioners or window A/C, this type of air conditioner is designed to cool one room only (as opposed to central air conditioners that can cool the entire house). It’s an easy-to-install, practical, and affordable option if you just want to cool a certain room rather than your whole house.

How does it work?

This type of 220-volt air conditioner can operate in different modes depending on the model. When in cooling mode, it takes in the air in the room, cools it, and then directs it back into that space. Most models allow you to choose from several preset cooling levels; it then works at that level until you turn the unit off or change the setting. Some 220-volt air conditioner models allow you to set your desired temperature and then work to maintain that temperature. It cycles on and off to do this. Some air conditioners even have a heating mode.

Which size is right for your room?

The best 220-volt air conditioner depends on the square footage of your room. Multiply the length of that room by its width. This will give you the size of the area in square feet. You can them choose the corresponding BTU rating based on the size of the room. The higher the BTU rating, the more cooling power the air conditioner has. As a general rule:

  • If the size of your room is 150 to 350 square feet, choose a 5,000 to 8,000-BTU air conditioning unit
  • If the size of your room is 350 to 550 square feet, choose an 8,000 to 12,000-BTU air conditioning unit
  • If the size of your room is 550 to 1,050 square feet, choose a 12,000- to 18,500-BTU air conditioning unit
  • If the size of your room is 1,050 to 1,600 square feet, choose a 18,500- to 25,000-BTU air conditioning unit

Remember: Choosing a window-type 220-volt air conditioner is all about choosing the optimum size for cooling a room efficiently. If you choose an undersized unit, it won't be able to cool the room adequately. If you choose an oversized unit, it might not remove enough humidity thereby leaving your indoor air feeling damp.
