Become familiar with the culture, tradition, and language of the Gullah people
Posted: Sep 23, 2016
On Hilton Head Island, there is a culture known as Gullah that is quite different from the rest of the US. The Gullah people work to preserve and celebrate their heritage and give visitors the opportunity to get to know it while they visit. If you are thinking that they are so lucky to have their culture, then you are right; but you are also misinformed about the things they’ve had to go through to preserve it.
For a long time, the Gullah people were originally slaves who fought to get and keep their freedom. In today’s age, the Gullah descendants work to keep their culture alive by preserving the traditions, food, arts, activities and more that the Gullah people brought to Hilton Head from West Africa.
If you are taking a vacation or thinking about taking a vacation to Hilton Head, you should include a Gullah tour in your activities. There are many beaches and golf courses on Hilton Head, but learning about and experiencing Gullah culture adds an additional layer of authentic experience. One of the important parts of their culture is their unique language and their use of the land to survive.
Thanks to their isolation from the mainland for many years, the Gullah people were able to maintain their culture, heritage, traditions, language and most importantly their unique cuisine. It is said that the name ‘Gullah’ comes from the word ‘Angola’ that is a West African country from where the slaves came. Others believe that the word comes from the name ‘Gola’, a West African tribe who lived in South Africa.
There is a similarity to their original West African culture in their arts, crafts, religious beliefs as well as folklore and food preferences. Without visiting the country, you will able to get a glimpse of the culture by visiting Hilton Head. In addition to experiencing the Gullah Geechee culture, there are plenty of outdoor activities and places to visit. To enjoy nature and the beach, you may want to visit Coligny Beach Park. For a great bike ride, Hilton Head Island is a good place as there are many trails to explore. You can also visit Arts Centre of Coastal Carolina to enjoy history and more cultural information.
Hilton Head Island truly has something for everyone and is a great place to visit. Create an itinerary of all of the things you want to experience and enjoy during your trip, and enjoy!
