Red white and blue gymnastics leotards are made just right for rhythmic gymnastics. The world's oldest existing international sports organization is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is the governing body of competitive gymnastics. The Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), or International Federation of Gymnastics (IFG) was founded on July 23, 1881, in Liège, Belgium. According to its rules, only women compete in rhythmic gymnastics.

The sport brings together elements of ballet, gymnastics, dance, and apparatus manipulation. Gymnasts perform five routines using five things; ball, ribbon, hoop, clubs, and rope. A floor area is used for the performance that has to have a more aesthetic appeal rather than acrobatic. The group routines have 5 gymnasts that can use any of the 5 apparatuses. The highest score of any rhythmic routine is set at 30 points. Artistry includes choreography and music and its score is averaged with the score gained for the complexity of the moves. This total is then added to the execution score.

At the international level, gymnasts can compete in Junior and Senior events. Junior events are meant for athletes less than 16 years of age while the Senior events are for those who are above 16. In the USA, Russia and most of Europe the best time to start training for athletes is at a young age. If you see any talent in your three to four year old, let them take up classes in school. By the time they grow up they will be ready to take part in the biggest and the most popular gymnastics events such as the Olympic Games, World Championships, European Championships, World Cup and Grand-Prix Series.

The five apparatus used in rhythmic exercises are as follows:

Ball

The rubber or plastic ball has to be from 18 to 20 cm in diameter with a weight of 400 grams or more. It can be of any color and should not rest on the wrists, instead on the hand. You can throw, bounce or roll the ball during the performance to create a flowing movement. Both hands are used by the gymnasts while working the entire floor area.

Hoop

Plastic or wood hoops that retain shape during the routine are used. The hoop must not weigh less than 300 grams and has to have an interior diameter from 51 to 90 cm. Gymnasts can rotate the hoop on their hand or body. The can roll, swing, throw, and pass through the hoop during the performance. They can also leap and jump.

Ribbon

Ribbons are required to be made of satin or similar cloth of any color or combination of colors. They can also have designs. The lengths vary for seniors and juniors. The gymnasts have to make large flowing movements with the ribbon that is attached to a stick.

Clubs

Clubs are required to be thrown by hands and pass underneath each other to be caught by the other hand. They rotate during the throw. You can give it a single or a double or a triple spin. The clubs can be thrown higher to achieve more complex patterns.
