Animal Emergency Service is an after-hours emergency and critical care veterinary clinic providing support to specialists and veterinarians across Northern New South Wales and South-East Queensland. Established over 15 years ago the original clinic was at Bowen Hills then in 2000, the practice moved to Underwood in conjunction with Veterinary Specialist Services with the synergy providing experienced 24 hour care for sick and injured pets and wildlife. In 2008, the Carrara practice was opened and both locations have been kept busy ever since.

Upon arrival to either location, pet owners are met by friendly receptionists or nurses who assess the pet’s status. If the pet is critically ill, they are taken immediately to the treatment room and stabilised while the owner waits in a private consultation room for the vet on duty. If the pet isn’t critical, they are placed in the consultation room with their owner. A veterinarian performs a thorough physical examination and recommends either outpatient treatment to be followed up with their regular veterinarian, or hospitalisation. Owners are encouraged to ask questions about their pet’s condition and treatment as it is important they are comfortable with the proposed treatment and have a clear understanding of the situation at hand.

In the event of hospitalisation, there is round the clock monitoring and treatment by dedicated and highly qualified professionals. Added benefits are the new and state of the art equipment on hand including x-ray, ultrasound, video endoscope, oxygen therapy equipment, including specially designed beds, life support ventilators, monitors such as pulse oximeters, ECG, blood pressure and capnograph equipment, state of the art surgical suites, in-house blood testing, immediate access to blood and plasma transfusion and sufficiently high quantities of antivenene for all common snakes, as well as tick anti serum.

During hospitalisation, pet owners are encouraged to phone for updates on progress and visits are welcome. Upon discharge to go home, or to their regular vet, a full report of the pet’s treatment is provided to the owner and forwarded to the regular vet clinic to keep the veterinarian up to speed on the progress. These standards have maintained Animal Emergency Service’s reputation for being the best in their field, and strengthened their relationship with veterinarians across Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Northern New South Wales.

There are many other services Animal Emergency Service provides. They provide temporary boarding for stray animals. In the event a microchip is present (with up-to-date details), owners are contacted within minutes to be reunited with their loved one. Animal Emergency Service also works closely with Wildcare Australia in the treatment of sick and injured wildlife.
